After a brief hiatus on the Booth (it’s been two months since Hoppin Over Fences), things are looking up for North Carolina native and Booth Freestyle vet King Mez. With a project set to release and an upcoming appearance on MTV2’s Sucker Freestyle, Mez will no doubt be an emcee to watch in 2011. Champions is his comeback single; an epic showcase of his furious wordplay and hungry swagger. Producers Ski Beatz and Apple Juice Kid’s dramatic, cymbal-crashing beat splashes in the background while Mez convinces us why he’s a force to be reckoned with: “Even if you ahead of me, at this moment you students.” He even compares himself to a modern day Rakim or Nas, just without the profanity. (It’s true, this song is squeaky clean). If nothing else, Champions will leave you with a clear impression of the kind of emcee Mez is—intelligent and (very) hungry, reminiscent of fellow Tar Heel J. Cole. If those two qualities don’t lead to success, I don’t know what does. King Mez’s forthcoming project The Re Runs drops on Feb. 27 right here at DJ Booth. Keep it locked.

This is the real H.A.M! Kidding, but really, this record will sadly get so overlooked, and it has the same approach and wow factor as the Kanye/Jay song did. Love this epic production and Mez went absolutely hard on the track. Definitely one for the playlist!
