Memphis Bleek - Still Ill
Artist: Memphis Bleek
Producer: Canei Finch [for CaneiLive Productions]
Album: The Process
Label: Get Low/Mass Appeal/E1
Last we heard from Memphis Bleek was way back in summer ‘08, but don’t think for a minute that his on-the-mic skills have dulled during his time away from our front page. Now signed to his own indie label Get Low, the Roc-A-Fella alumnus is back to prove that he’s Still Ill with the lead single off his endlessly-delayed fifth studio album. From bar one, this joint bleeds energy – producer Canei Finch [for CaneiLive Productions] serves up a blisteringly fresh breakbeat-synth-harpsichord instrumental, and Bleek comes with rhymes to match. Though the emcee’s breezy bars are straightforward as far as lyrical message is concerned – Bleek’s back, he’s still getting money, and if he gets angry he might shoot you – his propulsive flows will leave few unimpressed. Memphis’ enthusiasm can’t be denied, but will his 2010 comeback be the real deal? We report, you decide. If you agree with this this record’s title, you’ll want to mark your calendar for the March 23 release of The Process, the rapper’s first full-length since ‘05’s 534 (and the first of his career not to be released under Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam).

One of the dopest records from Bleek in recent memory. He certainly is helped by the inheritance of this highly addictive beat, but you cannot deny his always-consistent energy and flow.

This really suriprised me. In the past I've listend to Bleek off of Jay-Z albums and he was always wack. Always. So I had low expectations for this song but I was impressed. Though it's not great but by my standards of him, this is the best song lyrically I've heard by him. The hook was lackluster but his rhymes and flow kept the song hot.

Wow this is sick! That beat was nasty. Loved how it kept switchin up (the harpsichords were tight as hell). That's a creative beat right there. Oh yeah and Memphis absolutely wrecked it. He definately hasn't lost anything. That flow was fire.

Bleek is on point with this track, but the production doesn't match up with him. Just my speakers????

I feel like Bleek's kinda conformed to the game right now. He's still good though. This production is something special. It blends the oldschool loops and scratches with "Graduation"esque melodies. A little Maybach Music bass maybe? 3rd listen and its only getting better

Over the years I've felt like M-Bleek's dad...I've always had high hopes for him and have always been dissapointed. He comes hard on this one and shows his potential but the hook and the production is WHACK!

Damn, I'm gonna have to basically agree completely with @HoamBoy and disagree with @wydeopen. I'm digging the boom bap production (though the chorus needs work) and Memphis Bleek came with it here. Man surprised me, I'm down for some more Memphis now.

Good song, always liked Bleek but he needs a hit single so his album wont flop because then he'll go in hiding for another couple of years. We need more Bleek, help him Jay!!!

A carefully layered, booming drum arrangements and harpsichord fueled Canei Finch production power this 3 minute nodd-fest, and absolutely diggin the straightforward, no-frills approach to verses by Memphis Bleek... BANGER!!!

I smell a Jackson 5 sample on this, but nonetheless this production goes hard. I'm glad he's back and this track shows why he needs to be back
