Like so many other up-and-comers before her, rising soul star Melanie Fiona is looking to stir up anticipation for her debut full-length with an official prelude mixtape—well, sort of; as the Roots’ ?uestlove, Fiona’s collaborator on the project, explained in a video featured last month, Melanie Fiona Meets the Illadelphonics will be neither a “mix” nor a “tape,” but a collection of live remixes of cuts off her LP. Be that as it may, leaked track Ay Yo sounds much more like a finished track than an off-the-cuff jam session. Singing over ?uest and the Illadelphonics’ lush, bossanova-esque instrumental accompaniment (featuring a reverb-drenched percussion rhythm by ?uest himself), Fiona sounds just as natural as she did over Andrea Martin‘s Zombies-sampling beat on her Booth-acclaimed debut single, Give It to Me Right. Though Ay Yo‘s official album version has yet to be released, it’s hard to imagine this infectious interpretation not doing the song justice; in any case, this high-quality performance is sure to get fans excited about seeing Fiona live, as well as raising anticipation for the impending releases of both the prelude “mixtape” and Fiona’s forthcoming full-length, The Bridge.

It has been well-documented inside our Booth how I feel about Ms. Fiona. I anxiously await this "non-mixtape" in my inbox and her debut in my stereo. Beautiful voice and wonderful live instrumentation backing it up.

Her voice is really nice. The live production is underrated in our genre. This has a old mamba 40's sound to it. Really beautiful woman sing and realy beautiful song. Shouts to the Might Roots Crew, for being legends!

I really like Melanie Fiona, I became a fan of hers when I heard Give it to me right...Thats a Real Nice Hit in my book!!! But this joint is real smooth and classy ...this is bad that it won't get much airplay if any!!! But i like it!!

Fiona seems like a girl that chooses quality over quantity. this is a quality track, not so much my style so i was goin to go wit 3, but ill rate it for wat its worth.

I heard this the other day . She is so dope. She is definitely another eclectic artist for the books. I'm loving the live style of instrumentation.

Melanie might just be better than all our favorite R&B singers... amazing vocals! She's just perfect, and we're talkin live!
I'd love to see her take over the industry, she's a blessing to the genre. Love the live approach, hearing bossanova in the DjBooth was unexpected, lol |

The best word to describe this track is gorgeous. Everything about it is just gorgeous. The beautiful soulful vocals, the guitar, and the always solid drums from ?uestlove. I even love how she raps a bit for a change of pace. It will be great to see someone like this blow up, so I'm in agreement wit FredRico.

Melanie Fiona is a pretty good singeer and she more than a fluke and a pretty face. But I rather she sing on some other beat because this beat feels very 60's.
