¡MAYDAY! - Black Shades
Artist: ¡MAYDAY!
Producer: Jim Jonsin & Plex Luthor
Album: Stuck on an Island
Label: Strange Music
Summers in Miami are filled with hot parties, ridiculously beautiful women and, of course, the appropriate fashion accessories for every occasion. With their new single Black Shades, ¡MAYDAY! follow Corey Hart’s ‘80s mantra and wears their sunglasses at night. After rocking out with Lil Wayne (Get a Life) and catching some island vibes with Jovi Rockwell (On 2 Someth’n (Remix)), the band returns to their hometown sound, making music soaked in 305 ideals. Over some laid back production from co-producers Jim Jonsin, who’s on a production hot streak, and the band’s own Plex Luthor, the bravado and cockiness sported by most Floridians is on full display during emcee Bernbiz’s verses about of a night of mayhem and indulgence. The switch from the easy going chorus to the up-tempo verses mirror a typical Miami life; easy during the day and unpredictable at night. We might find the band Stuck on an Island when their new album drops September 7, but once we do, I can guarantee they’ll be sporting Ray Bans.

Every week I am sent a new Mayday record. My first thought is usually "Another one? Already? I don't know..." Then I listen and 30 seconds into the record I am sold. And that, folks, is how you do it.
"Black Shades" has crossover appeal, is perfect for the summer, and will surely be remixed for the clubs. Nice! |

The title obviously, and the chorus remind me of B.o.B.'s Past My Shades. It was cool the first time the beat died, but I got tired of it by the end. I'd rather have a transition. Good verses all around. Not my favorite song by MAYDAY, but I've still set aside money for the album.

Am I the only one who knows those opening quotes are from John Carpenter's flick They Live? Probably.
Anyway, I can't front, the chorus is a little annoying for me, but other than that I was really digging this. Definitely a new sound, as always, from MayDay. |
