In 2006 Matisyahu enjoyed an unlikely turn in the national spotlight – after all it’s not every day an orthodox Jewish rapper/singer/beatboxer with a distinctly reggae style gets played on MTV – but in the three years since his breakthrough album Youth he hasn’t exactly been a household name. Undaunted, he’s now re-releasing new versions of some past songs, starting with the Akon assisted One Day. A track that absolutely floats thanks to some lighter-than-air production from The Smeezingtons (whose name still makes me chuckle) One Day is a deeply inspirational track that Matisyahu fills with the sound of his distinctive voice and spiritual lyrics while Akon does his best Wyclef impression and tries to shift his focus from (not) disrespecting women to advocating for world peace, a difficult transition he accomplishes. If One Day has you lifted be sure to check out the updated re-release of Matisyahu’s last/new album Light, available in stores and online now.

i always wondered what happened to this dude. pretty generic track, perfect for those end-of-the-night closing songs where everyone's drunk and singing songs together.

I really dig these kinds of tracks because it provides a break from most of the music out there nowadays. It's so different but refreshing. Akon and Matisyahu have great harmony and the production fits well. Let's see this guy make a comeback.

Matisyahu has been on my radar for almost an entire decade, but his records NEVER got sent our way... until now. This record was handmade for Akon to jump on. Nice uplifting tempo, great feel good vibe, and definite replayability.

Akon and Matisyahu have great chemistry together and the beat fitted perfect too. The hook was deep with the two of them singing some inspiring lyrics together, it really made the song.

@ donjonjon, yea I could totally see that too! lol

Little outside of the norm for Matis' but he makes it work and Akon always brings hit potential

Hmmmm...I don't know if this quite had end of the night drunk singing potential to me, it's a little too serious. I'm still gonna have to stick with my top three drunk singing songs: Bon Jovi "Livin on a Prayer", Bel Biv Devoe "Poison" and, for some reason, Ludacris' "Fantasy", which I can always nail no matter how drunk I am...you know...if I drank.

Talk about getting off topic. Anyway, I liked this, though wasn't really feeling Akon, he just doesn't have the soul to pull off a track like this to me.

The original is far better. Akon's vocals are unnecessary and serve only as a clear attempt at radio success. Regardless, this gets a solid 4.

@Bradnieper - Drake is Jewish too.

Day before yesterday I was thinking "wtf happened to Matisyahu..." then this pops up here. Akon was able to pull of that track w/ Michael Jackson (Hold my Hand) and used a similar harmony. I think MJ made him look good though because this simply isn't on the same level. Matisyahu was kwl though.
