Master Shortie - Bringing It Back
Artist: Master Shortie
Producer: Labrinth
Album: A.D.H.D.
Label: Odd One Out
Countless artists and fans dream of seeing hip-hop return to its roots, but Booth newcomer Master Shortie has something decidedly different in mind when he announces that he’s “Bringin’ It Back to them old-school days.” As the UK singer/rapper explains on his latest single, his version of the old-school has less to do with classic beats and breaks than with Patrick Swayze and the Thundercats. Yep – this is an ‘80s-baby anthem through and through, from production Labrinth‘s synth-pop instrumental to the artist’s nostalgia-drenched verses, which should put smiles on the faces of anyone who grew up surrounded by the many cultural touchstones he name-drops. In an odd twist, Shortie admits he wasn’t actually there to experience the decade the first time around: “Back in the day, nothing fazed me. Why? I wasn’t even alive! I saw the ‘80s through my mother’s eyes.” All the more reason to bring it all back, I guess! Like what you’re hearing? This track and many more retro-informed bangers can be found on Master Shortie’s A.D.H.D.. LP, dropping January of next year via Hitz/Jive.

I was told the other day that we are late the party and this song has been making waves for months. I laughed... then I did a quick Google search. Indeed we are late to the party (this song was leaked to the net LAST summer), but it is now an official single and is being pushed by Hitz and Jive (his two US labels). So to everyone out there... blah blah blah!
In the end, the timing of the release is unimportant. The fact is that the song is catchy, fun, and should make some waves at radio. |

This track could make waves in popular music, but it's not quite a banger for me. I do love listening to his verses, but I think an emcee with a British accent automatically captures my attention. Nonetheless, the track was dope and I'm interested to hear more from him.

Because of what Memphitz did to K. Michelle, this is the rating I am giving all Hitz Committee tracks.

Pause while everyone born in the 80s, like yours truly, feels incredibly old. It frankly always takes me a minute to get used to dudes who rhyme with accents, but I have to give it up to Shortie, that's a shortie who can make an enjoyable jam and knows the roots of the game. |

Maybe late on this one, but always 11 steps on everything else so DJB.net is forgiven.
Track is okay, it is a very poppy tune and just okay for my taste. |
