There have been many pretenders to the throne, but there’s still only one queen of R&B, and her name is Mary J. Blige. Mary’s a woman in an industry full of girls, and on her new single I Am she’s not showing any signs of slowing down. Written by perennial hitmaker Johnta Austin and newcomer Ester Dean and produced by Norwegian super-duo Stargate, I Am opens with lush orchestration that jumps into a bouncing beat sure to have your head-nodding. As always, the real story here is Mary J. and her epic voice. There’s still no one who can break it down like Mary (apologies to Keyshia Cole), but her biggest strength may be her ability to hold back, letting the track breath in all the right places. Long story short, I Am’s going to be a hit, and it deserves all the acclaim it gets. I dare anyone on the Booth to disagree. Mary’s new album Stronger With Each Tear is due to hit our eardrums on December 20. Happy holidays indeed.

Mary is the best in the game right now and Nathan brought up an interesting point - "her biggest strength may be her ability to hold back, letting the track breath in all the right places." She is great at that... to go along with her amazing voice.

I think it is safer to overestimate MJB lol. She constantly has proved me wrong with one hit after another, so I'll take a knee (alright alright, two) and submit on this one. I have good reason too, though. Stargate produced an adequate platform for MJB to ravage.

Maybe it's the Stargate beat but this has a happy, feel-good vibe to it. That I haven't heard from Mary lately but I like it cause right now i'm gettin tired of break-up/depress songs (that Mary's know for).
Mary is still the queen, no one can make an R&B record like her and this is no expection. |

Whew, this is why I love Mary. It may not be as hip-hopish as her older stuff, but all of her cd's have been solid, and she never disappoints. I would love to see this go up the charts, but I don't think it will. I really hope it does though.

@Menilik MHD It's funny you mention that, cause I def caught a Mariah "Shake It Off' vibe on this track on the first listen, though I'll take Mary over Mariah at the end of the day (and that's really saying something.) All hail the queen!

Just from hearing the first few seconds of it. That's the Mary J we know! She keeps making uplifting music for ladies to rock to!
This really gonna make a big impact on charts and will help her move major units in its first week sale. December = Christmas time = extra sales. |

I look at the previous ratings and I've come to the conclusion that this has been rated so high solely because it's MJB. Personally, I expected a little more from the queen of R&B. It sounds watered-down. She has more soul than this. The Chorus is what's making the song. The verses seem a bit thrown in there.

I really think we give her too much credit because she has been in the game so long. I would really like to hear a fresh voice on this track though. She gets song written for her and she just a puppet and her songs are all sounding simliar. 5 stars for the mix 2 stars for song.
