Marques Houston - Pullin' on Her Hair
Artist: Marques Houston
Featuring: Rick Ross
Producer: Marques Houston and Chris Stokes
Album: Mattress Music
Label: Musicworks Inc.
Though his last feature, Kickin’ and Screamin’, earned mixed – well, OK, lousy – reviews from readers, Marques Houston hasn’t given up the fight. Today, the Los Angeles native is back on our front page with, Pullin on Her Hair, a new radio single he hopes will get listeners in the Booth and beyond hooked on his brand of Mattress Music. The concept is, well, pretty self-explanatory: over his and Chris Stokes’ mellow, synth-driven instrumental, Houston soulfully explains just how much pleasure he derives from yanking on his girl’s ‘do. Fortunately, the female in question finds it as enjoyable as he does, even when it results in ruined cornrows. Teflon Don Rick Ross expresses his own penchant for hair-pulling on the guest tip – no word, unfortunately, on whether he likes having his beard tugged (you’ll just have to try for yourself next time you see him). Anyway, has Houston succeeded in winning you over with this bedroom jam? If your answer is “Yes,” you’ll most definitely want to grab a copy of the artist’s latest full-length when it hits stores and online retailers July 27.

I was not a fan of "Kickin' and Scream'," but I happen to like "Pullin on Her Hair." I believe MH to be a highly underrated artist and its a shame because he has a massive amount of talent.
Though nothing about this record screams guaranteed hit single, I believe it has a fighting chance to make a little noise. |

Although I'm a major antagonist against the officer, he does okay on this. I like this one a bit more than Kickin and Screamin, but I feel neither of these two songs are going to bring Marques the success he wants on his upcoming album.

MH sparked my interest with "Kickin and Screamin" and once again, he has gotten my attention. I like this one. MH's lyrics are decent to me, like a lesser R. Kelly. I mean "turning cornrows into an afro", lmbo.

Finally MH comes out with something descent!!
Very good synths mixed with hard knocking bass makes and MH's smooth vocals makes for a banger!! Rick Ross did good but the claps during his verse kind of ruined it for me!! |

Man, there are some Houston records that I can't go without "Naked" & "Slow Dance [Remix]" come to mind and then there are some that I won't mention that are well very forgettable. This is right in the middle.

This is good in just about one place, and even thats debatable depending on the girl, the bedroom. Rick should have done this by himself.

Not bad...Any word on who the writer is? The R. Kelly factor is apparent with the singing style and title alas Kellz "Pull Ya Hair" (which is a certified banger). Disclaimer: Let's hope it's her real hair and if it's not that weave better tight.

Houston definitely, let's say "influenced" by Dream's style, but considering how insanely dope Dream is that's not such a bad thing. Was't in love with this, but it's catchy, Houston comes through vocally, Ross drops a decent verse and the beat knocks. This could be the biggest hit for Houston in a minute.

Ross could have did this by himself and it would have been a better song. i dont like the mix on this ... the beat could be slightly hotter while were on it. ... but overall if it hit the radio it would prolly be in mad rotation :)

Haha wow, Marques Houston goes hard on this one. From the production to the auto-tune drenched vocals, this track is instantly going into my rotation. Production deserves a good five stars. I think with any other R&B artist this could have been a tad bit better. I'm not complaining though.
Rick Ross is Rick Ross. Interpret it how you want, I just don't see him as a valuable asset in the rap game. All together, this will probably some sort of acclaim, whether it be from the radio or the club, I'm sure something will make this song big. 3.5 |

I don't understand why the dude don't sing straight up. Its not like he can't sing.... Auto tune is 2009... Song would have probably faired better if he didn't AT it all up

Not really feeling this. Rick Ross has fallen off my radar. He had a few good tracks, but his recent stuff just doesn't cut it.

The old Marques Houston was much better. I think its the production that breaks this one though.

marques was alright, kinda like t-pain in his more singing-type days, ross was a poor feature choice, obivously wanting some big name, someone with a bit more sex appeal like luda or juelz wouldve fit in here. maybe even jada?

The radio-ready production sounds a little dated and audio effects on Houston’s vocals. Marques Houston's vocals are so raw and naturally gorgeous that I think he really shines on tracks that compliment the authenticity in his voice. No electronic loops, auto-tune or formulaic beats. But I can't front this is kinda catchy... to an extent.

I like the concept of the song but when put into practice its lacks impact. I was hoping that the boss would save the song but he didn’t step up either.
