Marques Houston - Kickin' and Screamin'
Artist: Marques Houston
Producer: Eric Crawford, Marques Houston & Chris Stokes
Album: Mattress Music
Label: Musicworks Inc.
If you haven’t been spending your time watching straight-to-BET movies starring D-list celebrities, you probably haven’t heard Marques Houston’s name in a while. However, with a new deal to Musicworks Inc./Capitol Records, Houston is ready to begin where he left on the R&B charts with his new single Kickin and Screamin. Alongside his reliable producers Chris Stokes and Eric Crawford, the comeback single should be a banger right? When the production started, it sounded like a mix of LOL Smiley Face with a drum beat from Omarion’s I Get It In – not really what I was expecting. However, when Marques’ vocals came in, I became somewhat upset. Don’t get me wrong, the man can sing, but ending every bar in the first verse with “Motherf***a?” Who does that?! If this single is a preview of what Houston’s new album Mattress Music sounds like, I’ll personally be fine without it – what do you think, Booth readers?

I'm confused. The album is called "Mattress Music" so shouldn't he be playing for a bedroom audience? At the beginning of this record Houston says "this one's for the clubs." Are there clubs with mattresses? Am I not going to the right night spots? Please help me.

Haha I don't know why he says this is for the club, cause it's definitely not, but it's not bad mattress music. I like the verses, and i'm really feeling the production, but that hook is kinda lame. Overall good, but forgettable. 2.5 stars

Heard this one a few weeks, downloaded it then trashed it a week later. He mixes up bedroom music with club music (obviously he doesn't know the difference). It's a good song, but the production is lame and the hook is kinda off.

Oh y'all haven't heard? They are going to put mattresses in the club so you can just skip the foreplay! Obviously MH just got the memo before us!

@ Z - We got a club down here in the MIA that does, indeed, have mattresses. It's pretty intense.
However, based on this track, the album must be called "Bedroom Music" because it puts you to sleep. I don't see this getting any play in the clubs (the tracks demographic). The chorus is solid but the overall track just lacks the energy to be a smash. |

Wow Marques Houston what the hell have you been doing with your life. Definitely has a huge hint of LOL Smiley Face on here, not good. I don't really see the point in this track. For some reason he sounds like Jamie Foxx a bit to me, but I don't think JF would do a song like this, at least I hope not.
Simple and airy lyrics that really don't do anything but pass time, slowly. The song just doesn't appeal to me at all, it justs a bit frustrating and overly annoying. Enough said. |

Yea it does seem like a odd choice of single considering the album title. I was more expecting some real smooth bedroom music from MH for his first single.
The production is pretty nice, though its to mellow to really hit the clubs (like MH said he wanted at the start of the track). I can see it getting some plays on the radio, though I doubt it will be as big of a hit as some of his previous songs (Clubbin & Naked). |

By no means is this a bad track, but it's not a good track either. Beat sounds kind of repetitive and Marques' voice really doesn't hold my attention.
He can do better. Omarion is better, definitely. |

I can't believe how unpopular this is with the Booth! I have been bumpin this for weeks and it is steadily getting better and better with each listen. The lyrics are on point, imo. The beat is simplistic yet catchy. This is a classic to me, but maybe I'm hearing something that others aren't...

I love how the spambot above me in the comments gave this track four stars. He's a bit more generous than I am, I guess.
Yes, it's slow. And kinda dull. And the production is bare-bones. And it's not a club banger. But your girl's gonna love it. It sets a great, relaxed mood, and the vocals aren't too shabby either. Give it a try, and relax a bit... |

What the hell is this Garbage. Why is this on the Booth. I was expecting Soulja boito come out anytime and lay down a verse< if you can call it that> His content was well reaally immature for someone who has been in the game for a long time. i think hes looking for a one of hit but i dnt think this is gonna do it for him. its cancer to ear for me

It's nothing special. Marques has a good voice but this is a just a mediocre track with unoriginal production and no lines worthy of quoting. I think he'd be better suited with a beat that doesn't hit as hard that he can just straight sing on.

This is pretty bad but i have to say i still have a little hope for MH because dude does have the ability to make some bangers like "circle" (which is my all time favorite MH track)!!
This is a sad attempt at a "club" song and an even worse attempt at making "mattress music"!! |

I agree with you Z. I'm not impressed with the song at all. I feel like he's trying to push up on Trey Songs signature style to bring him back. The beat is extremely lacking from what I've heard from him in the past. He should stick with production from one of his longtime collaborators Corey Bold, who did the Naked Remix feat. Mike Jones (which is hot by the way.) Better luck next time MH.

It's a good start to a song, but not a good finished product. It needs a new rhyme scheme in the first verse (Also, I don't think the term Motherf****r should be used at all in a song about sex, and really shouldn't be repeated over and over. It kind of creeps me out). Finally, the hook is weak. I don't know if the lyrics and melody need to be changed, but the track needs to change up a bit for it. The track needs more energy during the chorus. I think a bigger synth sound during the chorus could set it off.

I think Marques is highly confused because I don't know any clubs that will be playing this. I mean maybe a club that has beds and you can have sex to music but I don't think those exist. The beat sounds way to familiar...hmm Trey Songz maybe...nowhere near as talented as Trey though. Good effort but if Marques is going for a club song he needs to try and actually make a track that will have you dancing.

I won't talk bad because the track does it for me......#fail on the production, stop jacking and wrapping it up like you made it fresh and the vocals are grade school weak..I suggest trying this over a different beat with new lyrics, oh just scrap it and bake another one please

So the song overall isn't bad for a new artist trying to find his niche in the music world but MH isn't a new artist. I'm just left perplexed at how a tantrum can be appealing to women or men. It's catchy and I can see how this song would get rotated but then again the unnecessary usage of mothaf*ka leads me to believe otherwise. Ehh I'd switch the station and get easily annoyed after a few plays. C'mon Marques!

I thought ppl were hating on MH due to the super low rating, but I see it all now. How did this pass quality control.. I mean do you get in the booth and the more you think and sing the song the better it sounds to you?

It sounds nice, but the "heard before" beat arrangement accompanying it denotes its authenticity, ultimately making it hard to admire.
Plus engineered vocals and weak songwriting further helps to bring the song down from what it could have been. You're better than this Marques Houston, you're better than this. 1.5 |

I could not help but think of the thumping sound apparent in Omarion's I Get It In. I know the drum beat is being used here, but the mood of the song combined with Marques's R&B singing just deflates it.
