Some tracks really don’t need a lot of explanation (I’m looking at you We Get High), but Marky’s new single Victory Lap has a back story worthy of mention. If the horn-heavy, heavily soul influenced beat on the DMV fast riser’s newest leak sounds a little familiar that’s because it’s a beat from a Through the Wire era Kanye West that Marky’s just now decided to finally unearth. Thankfully, Marky does the quasi-vintage production proud, spitting a slow flow filled with lines promising that no one but God can stop his inevitable ascension to the top of the game: “Yes I feel victorious, God be the glorious, Imma do it big till my name’s bigger than Notorious.” Hey, aim high, right? If he’s running a victory lap now I can only imagine what the celebration will sound like when Marky’s EP Journey to Markyland, USA: Rest Stop 1, the first of three new projects, drops soon. Keep it locked for more.

This record reminds me of two things...
1) How much I miss the old Kanye on the beat. 2) How excited I am for more DJBooth readers to come into contact with Marky, an emcee we've been co-signing for a few years. Discuss. |

Marky has brought energy onto every track featured in the booth, so he's always worth my full attention. I was feelin the flow on here and the hook was fresh. Real dope.

With a track with the words "victory" in the title, the production HAS TO BE epic. I was very skeptical about that being produced by Kanye because he's been on some weird ish lately, music-wise.. But I'm glad to see kange went in old school here. I'm very impressed with this.

Unlike most, I don't really miss old-school Kanye West. I just wanna hear some new music from him. New or old you know it'll be the best. We were having quite a great 2009 with his guest spots and then...
As for the song, his flow could have used a little more excitement, in my opinion. |
