Like most of America, I couldn’t seem to get Mario’s hit song Break Up out of my head. But what I noticed most about Break Up wasn’t just how damn catchy it was, but that its more electronic style marked a noticeable departure for the usually organic R&B-focused Mario. Well, it’s officially a trend, because his new track Before She Said Hi is another electronically oriented cut, thanks to production from Dre & Vidal that builds orchestral strings around sharp Middle Eastern percussion. Vocally Mario’s voice is as smooth as ever, and this time around Big Sean takes Gucci Mane’s spot in the guest rapper spot, delivering a decent punchline heavy flow. Ultimately, Before She Said Hi is a decent track, but I just can’t see it blowing up like Break Up did. Hey, they can’t all be number one. You can hear more from Mario when his new album D.N.A., along with my review, drops tomorrow.

Different sound from Mario, but this was damn hot! The drum pattern on here was very addictive, and I liked the fast paced, soulful type of track. Props to Big Sean for getting such a big collabo, I hope this blows up! The chorus of Break Up is the reason it's #1, and this hook is nowhere close. 3 star rating though

Love the instrumental lead-up. Builds up the excitement of the track. Not single material, but we took the liberty to feature the track to help Mario get some additional pub for his new album release on Tuesday.
Enjoyable harmonies on the chorus, a solid guest verse from Big Sean, and no-doubt-about-it head nodding appeal. |

Oh man I'm seriously feeling this song. The hook really caught my attention, the melody is so smooth.
And my dude BIG SEAN BIG SEAN! I'm a huge fan of Big Sean btw :) |

I heard about this record the other day. This is really ill. The production is original and the vibe is different. Mario really came with it on this one. I'm glad R&B Artists aren't making cookie-cutter, same old, same old R&B Music. It was starting to get like that. I'm glad to hear something original. Big Sean sounds JUST like Kanye West on this. Something about his verse doesn't seem to be mixed right to capture attention well enough though. I hope this goes back to the mixing board before it hits the radio. It's still a great record though. It has very eclectic elements sonically. I digs, I digs.

I like the different sound from Mario. Not a bad look, digging the original vibe here..also a growing fan of Big Sean, his feature on here sounds out of place here though..or is it just me?...Hoping Finally Famous comes strong next year.

This song dosen't even come close to having the same feeling as Break Up. When I heard that I wanted to dance, hearing this I just want to lay down and go to sleep.
Mario is a great vocalist but dosen't pack enough energy like his peers (Chris, Ne-Yo, Trey) and Big Sean is just as boring, why was he even on hear? I'm surprised this is gonna be a single, it's simply just an album filter and dosen't at all have me exicted about the album. |

I agree with Nathan that this won't be as big as "Break Up." However, the only reason I think that is because it's not as "modern radio-hop trendy" as that was. This has a CLASSIC vibe to it (sounds like some old '70s/'80s soul). Big Sean might not be as famous as Gucci, but he's a MUCH better MC...don't know what's taking Def Jam so long to give the big promo push!
Side note: R&B dudes making Parental Advisory-material sets are a tricky bunch...One one hand, you have the freak-fest ones (R. Kelly, Ray J) while on the other hand is the actually mature & determined folks (Jaheim, Urban Mystic). I'm proud to say Mario fits in the latter category. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for Nathan's review (he gave big props to "Go," so this one will likely be a banger of a set too) |

I'm gonna be honest here, I still do not like "Break Up" at all. I think it's boring and bland. Same kinda goes for this one. I'm just not feeling these beats that Mario is singing on these days. I'm glad he's experimenting but still... He needs to go back to the "Let Me Love You" style (my favorite song of his).

I like the beat. Like the concept of the song coming from a man. Not too sure about the hook & chorus. "Break Up" was better.

i agree with Burmy, this is more album filler than actual single material. Thats why it isnt being released as one.
on the upside, this track was probably the only one that didnt leak before the album was officially released! Not to say that this song isnt good, its actually quite decent (it reminds me of Beyonce's 'Radio' slightly), but tracks like 'Stuttering' or 'Promised Land' should have been mastered/updated and put on the album than this song. The third single should be 'Soundtrack To A Broken Heart' that track is phenomenal. It has universal appeal, if it is released, i bank on that one to bring Mario back to the success he had with Let me Love You |

Definitely feeling the production, very good tune, mos def has a fresh vibe to it. Relaxed yet head-nod inducing flow to it. A solid album track, dats what it is. Mario plays his part smoothly and Sean's punchline-heavy raps are good but if he could change up the monotonous cadence I would've liked it more. Rotation-Stuff.

I heard a version last year with Young Chris of this. I was looking forward to hearing it released but now I'm kinda disappointed they changed up some of Mario's parts and put Big Sean in.

Like Z said, this is not really the type of material that would be good as a single. But it is different, which is good. I liked the percussion and how smooth his vocals were. Big Sean's guest verse was cool, I could rotate this.

This track's indicative to me of the album as a whole. it's definitely enjoyable, but are you really that excited about it? Ah, not really. And what is it going to take to get an elite rapper on a Mario track? I'll pay for Kanye/Luda to appear on one of his tracks personally. Seriously. (Well, not seriously, but you get the point).

i love this song but can also see why it wouldn't be a smash hit. in order to really pop, R&B either has to be on some heavy pop sounding ish, or some heavy hip-hop sound ish, it can't simply be r&b, which is very unfortunate. personally though, i really, really love this song.
