Maffew Ragazino - Black Sheep
Artist: Maffew Ragazino
Producer: Harry Fraud
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: Unsigned
First he declares himself a Foreign Exchange Student, now he’s a Black Sheep... get the feeling that Maffew Ragazino feels like a little bit of an outcast in the game? Whatever the case may be in the industry as a whole, the Brooklyn native – and his old school-informed style – will always have a home here in the Booth. The Brooklyn repper’s first official single, this cut is a uniquely forward-looking nostalgia trip; beatsmith Harry Fraud and DJ Skizz collaborate behind the boards, blending a gritty break, shrill brass blasts and a sampled vocal hook from Queens vets Black Sheep’s The Choice Is Yours into an eminently head-noddable backdrop for Ragazino’s rhymes. Lyrically, the artist keeps it brisk and breezy, deftly mixing braggadocio and trash talk with statements of artistic purpose: ”My shoe game stupid, I mean outrageous / Currently independent, no ties with the majors / Them other n*ggas cool, but don’t let ‘em fool ya, / These n*ggas posers, L-7 losers.” So, is this a proper (official) introduction to the up-and-comer? Those digging it should keep it locked for the latest on M.R.‘s yet-untitled, yet-unscheduled debut set.

I like the jazzy sound, but I wished he would have used more creativity with the track. But I sort of like the beat.

Great production, this beat knocks. Ragazino has a nice flow, but I wasn't really felling they hook. I He has some witty lines, and I thought the hook could have used some more of his lyrical ability. Saying they same line over and over isn't all that creative. A good track nonetheless.
