Otherside, the very first Booth feature from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, saw the former delivering a brutally honest chronicle of his struggle with addiction, and reflecting on the extent to which pop artists bear responsibility for glamorizing chemical dependency. Needless to say, the record was an inspiration to many hip-hop fans struggling with substance abuse. On the latest off the duo’s newly-released debut set, Mack makes an even more difficult admission to the fans for whom he’s a role model: like so many others in his position, he relapsed in a moment of weakness. In an ironic reversal, however, it’s the fans who look up to him that gave him the courage to go on. Lewis provides a tunefully understated instrumental to back his partner’s personal narrative, and singer Ben Bridwell ties the record together with some plaintive hook vocals.
