Mac Miller - Jerry’s Record Store
Artist: Mac Miller
Producer:
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: Rostrum Records
Mac Miller‘s smash-hit debut full-length found the Pittsburgh rhymesayer giving listeners a guided tour of his favorite hometown haunts—from Frick Park Market to the titular Blue Slide Park. Turns out, however, that he didn’t manage to hit all the local hotspots in the course of an album. Fresh off being crowned Staff Pick for Emcee of the Year in the 2011 Best of the Booth Awards, the indie sensation returns with a new promo cut dedicated to his music retailer of choice, Jerry’s Record Store. Leaked via Twitter at midnight, this laid-back selection finds the rapper getting lost in thought over a lightly jazzy groove borrowed from A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad‘s remix of Scritti Politti and Mos Def‘s Tinseltown to the Boogiedown (complete with an outro pulled from a Beatnuts-produced rendition of the same record). Among the topics touched upon in Miller’s breezy, free-associative bars are his spiritual beliefs (“Believe in God but don’t believe religion.”), his musical influences (The blues and Lauryn Hill receive shout-outs.) and his taste in footwear (“On some shelltoes…”). Jerry’s Record Store is a stand-alone release but, as the artist helpfully reminds listeners on the back, his freshman full-length is available on iTunes for a mere $9.99.

Miller made a name for himself in 2011, so its no wonder he only waited 11 days into the new year to continue making an impact. Love the authentic throwback sound that you get by recording directly off vinyl. I wouldn't say Mac's vocals are vintage, but the sound certainly is.

Mac always has dope production, but his flow is really getting old. Nothing sounds new.

I like the smooth beat on this joint. I like Mac's delivery on here. This has a bit of a Neo soul type feel to it and it's a good thing here. I'll give this a few spins.

Mac Miller suprisingly sounds quite good on this jazzy laced up beat but overall it didn't blow my mind. Nontheless I enjoyed it.

I remember this sample from the Scritti Politti Tinseltown to the Boogiedown joint with Mos Def on it. Like, I want to like Mac but I just can't get into him. This joints isn't terrible though.

Dope beat, Miller really shows that he can rip anything distinctly Hip Hop. I don't mind at all that he didn't tailor his lyrics to sound vintage like the track; bottom line, his lyricism may not have been a throwback but he kept his style relevant to our era of Hip Hop.
