M-Dot - You Don't Know About It
Producer: Jean Marot
Album: Run MPC
Label: EMS Productions
To paraphrase former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, there are known knowns, things we know we know, and known unknowns, things we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns, things we don’t know we don’t know. On his latest single, You Don’t Know About It, Boston representative (and freestyle series contributor) M-Dot and French beatsmith Jean Maron hook up with a seasoned rap vet to cast light on a few subjects that (for most of us) fall into that latter category. Over Maron’s head-nodding old-school beat (complete with a hook sampled from Pitch Black’s It’s All Real), Dot drops some knowledge regarding the tough life of an up-and-coming emcee. The legendary Masta Ace takes over on the middle verse, steering the cut into some seriously nostalgic territory: “You don’t know about spitting a battle rap, punk, while your man bangs a beat on a Cadillac trunk / You don’t know about the Union Square in ‘86, I swear it was like a thug reunion there.” If you’re digging this retro-yet-fresh track, you’re sure to find more to your liking on M-Dot’s Run MPC LP, due out August 31.

M-Dot continuously surrounds himself with talented produces and dope guest emcees. This new featured record is no different. Masta Ace always puts it down (I am taking bets he will still smoke 16s when he is well into his 70s) and Jean Marot was an unknown unknown to me before this joint, but I've become a fan now.

You can't hate on a track that embodies what it means to be "real hip-hop" nowadays. You can never have too much of this kind of hip-hop. It has a superbly sampled hook, and some great lyrical content. I love it.

'there are known knowns, things we know we know, and known unknowns, things we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns, things we don’t know we don’t know' - Prob one of the best mind aching intros I've read from you ahaha nice!
Production was laid out & chilled and I loved Masta Ace on it but M-Dot was just ok to me. I think if the whole mixtape is along this line of production would be quite enjoyable. |

Boston stand up! M-Dot's definitely on the come up, and there's no better street co-sign than Masta Ace. Some bangingly triumphant production plus solid flows from M and Masta make this one definitely repeat worthy.

I still bump shit from 10-20 years ago, cuz good shit is good shit. This dude M-Dot spits more modern with the multi-syllable rhyming & picture painting but his beat choice is throwback and I like that. Plus you can't go wrong with Ace. @smokey I seen you rated J.Cole's new track a 5 & J is a classic 90's throwback artist dunny. Come on son a 2 for this? haha

Hi everybody,
this is DJ JEAN MARON, I just want to thank you all for the feebacks ans comments. Just to answer SOMKEY the old school flava of the masta song is intentional and it doesnt mean that I'm living in 2010. BUt i hear yo; I just ask you to listen to the full album after the release of RUN MPC august 31st and please let us know what you thik of the whole project. I ve try to produce a real album with a comon vibe and a link between each songs. Concepts and story. for example first song is masta ace track and the last song of the album feat craig g and it start by a cut with a masta ace's line. Nothing is random. :-) |
