Lyfe Jennings - If I Knew Then
Artist: Lyfe Jennings
Producer: C. Jennings [for Jesus Swings Records]
Album: I Still Believe
Label: Mass Appeal Entertainment
Man, if I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn’t have bought that MC Hammer tape and those parachute pants. (Hey, take it easy on me, I was eight.) The wish that your younger, more reckless self had the wisdom you do now is one we’ve all had, and it’s a wish Lyfe Jennings knows only too well. In the follow-up single to his DJBooth approved Haters, Jennings is back with his new offering If I Knew Then, a slowly smoking track that’s captivating, thanks in no small part to Lyfe’s always stellar vocals - absolutely no one else sounds like he does - and some beautifully understated production from C. Jennings, though I would have liked to have heard more of the acoustic flavor we get at the end. If I Knew Then is part of Lyfe’s upcoming new album I Still Believe, tentatively scheduled to drop in April of 2010. (FYI: “Tentative” is industry speak for “there’s almost no chance the album’s going to drop then.”)

The reason I like Lyfe so much is the fact that he's so unique. I didn't like this as much as "Haters" but this was still a solid cut.

If I Knew Then (what I do now), I would have not wasted a few years dating chicks who only drove me insane and (most importantly) led to my bank account to dip to all-time unacceptable levels...
As for this record... I am not sure it has hit single potential, but I like it a lot. Lyfe is Lyfe, baby. He could do any type of record and make it all his own. |

Lyfe is back....and with this, it sounds like theres a lot of life left in him. Lyfe always brings it w/the ladies jams and always at the right time (in the winter wen its time to cuddle up w/ur gurl to keep her warm).

Lyfe is one of my favorite vocalists. I love his raspy and real voice that gives so much soul to his tracks. This, however, is not one of my favorite tracks from him. The production is practically non-existant and the melody and hook could use a little work. They are too repetitive for me, but I really thought the part of the track that worked well was the spoken/rapped portion at the end. I'm with Nathan, that guitar portion at the ended added a lot more to the track.

This is my favorite track of the day. Lyfe has one of those voices that's so unique it sounds great even if it's not technically perfect (like Avery Storm). This is quality R&B right here, that real slow, head-nodding ish. I'm going on ten listens to If I Knew Then and I'm not remotely tired yet. (Though I could have done without the quasi-rap from Lyfe at the end.)

Decent song, the production isn't as strong as his past releases, but its not bad. Looking forward to his new album, which is supposedly his last. He's very unique, contains a lot of soul and that has always captivated me in his music. Just a little note for Nathan S. and the DJBOOTH staff, the producer, C. Jennings is Lyfe Jennings, his real name is Chester Jennings. Just a lil fyi for you guys.

A nice listen. Decent and kinda repetitive beat with a serviceable hook. A good thought-out theme but surprisingly weak execution.
I can throw it in rotation, but wouldn't be on my personal playlist. 2.5 |
