Have you ever felt neglected in a relationship? If so, then Lyfe Jennings has just made your new anthem. On his new single Busy, Lyfe assumes the role of a man whose significant other refuses to show him enough attention. Vocally Lyfe puts on a clinic with this joint, plus piano-tinged production by The Hyenas, a catchy chorus and a strong outro all prove that the Must Be Nice singer still has it. However, Busy ironically suffers from its own topic: the song simply has too much going on. Sounding more like an album-cut than a single with its busy signal effects and dialogue interludes, the song almost loses its emotion while trying to emphasize its concept. Luckily, Lyfe’s voice is intriguing enough to make you sympathize with him and wonder why on Earth this woman doesn’t invest more time in such a talented man. Will Booth listeners pick up on Busy or will Mr. Jennings hear dial tones? That’s up to you. Busy is the new single of Lyfe’s upcoming album I Still Believe (previously titled Sooner or Later), due out in April

A great start when that hard hitting beat comes on which totally blew me away. For some reason I was expecting a slow record but I'm glad Lyfe came with a banger. I could hear this on the radio and possibly being bigger than Must Be Nice. Great and an unexpected record from him.
Sidebar: What is Lyfe saying in the hook? It's like K-Yo-Wo-Wo. Idk but it's still in my head. |

This was a solid offering from Lyfe, but I do agree with Quentin that it serves better as an album cut rather than a single. The production was a creative idea but that repeated busy signal throughout really got old. Lyfe made it work though and the chorus, though a little strange, was pretty damn catchy and I grew to like it. Solid 3 stars.

I've always been a big fan of Lyfe, but the name of this song perfectly describes the problem with it (as Quentin pointed out in the review blurb).
I am not sure that this record will see success as a single - radio programmers will shy away because of the long gaps without vocals. As an album track? Solid. Not much more.

That beat is too cold i would never think to put a busy dial tone in a song because i thought it was the most annoying sound in the world but it fits so well, alot of females are going to loe this song...but this is so creative...

I'm going to have to agree with Quentin, the track could have used some serious editing, but with that said Lyfe's vocals are so damn good I barely care.
I don't mean to nitpick here, but when's the last time you heard a busy signal? Do they even exist anymore? Don't all phones just send you straight to voicemail now? That's a serious question by the way.

Let me start by saying I am a Lyfe fan; I've enjoyed all of his music. This song is definitely a great song but there was something about the hook that was bugging me. I like the music and the lyrics and I believe the hook will eventually become tolerable. I've listened to the song 4 times and it is soothing music up until you get to the hook. I believe I'll be singing along eventually. But my initial reaction is that I dont like the hook, however the music playing in the background is beautiful.

-The hook totally murked this song for me, I could of tolerated the busy tone in the intro (because it was pretty ingenius to do that, producers will officially sample ANYTHING) but the whining in the hook did not make me want to listen to this very much. I'll stick with his old stuf until further notice.

Vocals, production and subject matter and you'll discover an entertaining song.
But hook - faulty in its execution, makes the whole listening experience more uncomfortable than anything. |
