Lupe Fiasco - Words I Never Said
Artist: Lupe Fiasco
Featuring: Skylar Grey
Producer: Alex Da Kid
Album: Lasers
Label: First&Fifteenth/Atlantic
With the March 8 release date for his oft-delayed album Lasers finally drawing closer, Lupe Fiasco seems to be intent on building anticipation and stoking controversy. His new single, Words I Never Said, seeks to up the ante so to speak, just in case you thought he was fooling around on Dumb It Down. Clearly, Mr. Fiasco has had some things on his chest, and his “Give-A-F*ck” switch is set to off: he’s coming after your feelings if you voted for Barack Obama or consume mainstream media, and that was only half-way through the list. Alex Da Kid‘s dark, futuristic production lends power to the song’s lyrics, while Skylar Grey‘s vocals are haunting and infectious, but no less daunting when you consider the profundity of the hook: “It’s so loud inside my head/With words that I should have said!/As I drown in my regrets/I can’t take back the words I never said.” Lupe Fiasco is known for being outspoken in interviews, on his blog and even on Twitter, but never has he been as loud as he is on Words That I Never Said.

People have been quick to label "Words" as a "controversial" song. Does it have shock value? Sure. Is it a bit touchy? Can be. But "controversial"? Naw, not buying it. This feels more like a talented emcee taking a perfectly carved radio smash and saying "This is the f**k how I feel. Who cares about radio play." Is that a good move? I don't know, but there is no way radio falls in love with his war/Middle East sentiments. None.

Not meant for radio but Lupe definitely doesn't need radio material. Just take a look on Twitter once in a while and you'll see how strong his following is online alone. For this track, I'm actually glad he went this route. Loved the lyrics and although he did label it controversial himself, I think it will be controversial in a good way. Lupe is back!

There are very few rappers around that rap with the same substance Lupe does.
Lupe fails to disappoint yet again, Skylar Grey delivers a nice hook and Alex Da Kid comes up with a great production |

Lupe did this song knowing that the radio wouldn't like it and he made it knowing that people would find it controversial. He did this as a "F you. I'm going to say what I want to say." and he killed it. The first two verses were a lot about controversial things going on in the news, but the 3rd verse was an amazing and on point verse about how people are today. I think this is an amazing song and the reason its classic is cuz this guy didn't make a non radio hit so he could act gangster and say lies about crimes he committed, he made a non radio banger to say what he wants to say about real issues. A real artist does stuff like like this. Fake artists talk about their "criminal record" and all the money they make. We are not losers, we are LASERS

Always showcasing his talent, always going his own route, always doing what he believes and sees as his own way, going to colleges to have discussions of topics, business and industry issues, etc. The man does his own and is in a league of a select few. Radio? Real hip hop has not hit the radio in quite some time, this will not either.

Great record. Even with a mainstream producer and Skylar's hook made for radio, Lupe speaks his mind and doesn't hold back. He might not get a hit single off the album but his fans are loyal enough that they'll support him anyways.

Before I just thought Lupe was OK, but not anymore. The fact that he doesn’t care about the radio not playing this record is big for me. Too many rappers these days are scared to say what’s really on their mind.
This is very worthy of a 5 star ratings. Thank you Lupe, maybe more people won't be scared to do the same (Doubt It). |

This is a truth bomb of note... It's obviously not for everyone but the hype around it at the moment could cause more album buys. This really is a great song, deep and from the heart. Mad respect for Lupe, certainly one of the most talented emcee's around

I dunno if im feeling this that much. All individual parts of the track are good, though i dont think they blend well. Production is good, Lupe is dope & the hook is good (though it dosnt match up with Lupe's rhymes).
I cant see this being a radio hit... |

Man, we've been waiting for Lasers forever, and Lupe is gonna kill it, especially with tracks like this. Love his straight-forward approach: non-radio lyrics on a radio-ready beat, what are stations gonna do? haha probably not play it, but I love that Lupe's doing it his way right now.

I concur that this is an awful single choice... buzz track, maybe. but to actually send it to radio?
As far as a lupe song goes, the production is top notch, the rhymes and lyrical content are up to his highest album material standards, and i love that hook. the only flaw is the lack of metaphors and punch lines, which are usually what makes lupe's best stand out from his great. |

The TRUTH is always controversial, and so it doesnt get radio or television time. But if you kissed a girl and liked it then you are a superstar.
There is no way this is less than 4 stars. Lupe is better than majority. Very, very few can make tracks like this. |

Meet Lupe's giant middle finger to Atlantic.
I obviously don't know how it went done, but I have to imagine Lupe got this Aelx/Skylar beat and told to make another Love the Way You Lie/Castle Walls. Instead he did one of his most outspoken tracks yet, and one that radio will never play. That kind of commitment to his art and vision is extraordinarily rare, and I couldn't respect the man more for sticking to it. |

Everyone who has mentioned that "real hip hop" isn't played on the radio is 100% correct. Sadly, it is not. At the same time, though, major labels need to run a cost-effective business. Spending money on an artist, who creates great material but doesn't gain radio play, isn't something they are (usually) willing to do. Thus, I am slightly surprised that a record like this got a green light.
Lupe has millions of fans, so he probably doesn't give a sh*t about radio spins. But Alex Da Kid and Skylar Grey don't create radio-ready records as potential controversial album cuts. Just my two cents. Make sense? |

Although I don't agree with this being a great choice for the second single, it still manages to deliver! From the powerful verses to the very infectious hook. This is definitely a winner!

First off the beat is amazing and the words ...... man you have to be intellectually inclined to even understand them. Both Lupe and Skylar were perfect in this masterpiece of lyrics, beats, and emotion. In one word this song is CLASSIC

I think that the song is excellent, and about the radio play worthiness of it...I think Lupe has found the balance for mainstream appeal and the "rebelliousness of the times". It would not be the first time that a song gained a following by expressing emotion on their current experiences ie...Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Many thought he was crazy for doing that track and look at what happened. I hope Lupe gets his due from this...track is fire!!
