With politicians quick to point out the negatives in hip-hop, some must wonder, ”are there any positives??” Answering that question with a resounding “Yes!” is Lupe Fiasco, who tells the story of an aspiring MC who can truly say “Hip Hop Saved My Life.” Surrounded by problems with his family, his woman, and his baby son, the song’s fictional rapper gets into super-grind mode so everyone can be happy. Accompanied by a soft, soulful hook from singer Nikki Jean (you’ve got company, Chrisette) and the relaxing, classic-sounding production of Soundtrakk, Hip Hop Saved My Life will evoke emotions for aspiring artists and their fans alike. Hip Hop Saved My Life (along with Paris, Tokyo) are set to be official releases from his stellar album The Cool.
Lupe's album is about 50% hotness and 50% just decent; and this is one of the 6-7 tracks that I think is FIRE. This is a hot track and so is Paris Tokyo and a few others. It is a must-hear album for sure, and this is a fine example of Lupe at his best...
This is a classic hip hop song in my opinion. I saw Lupe in concert in SF last month and this song was the highlight for me. 2500 people all screaming "hip hop saved my life". It was crazy to say the least.
Like my hometown comedian T.P. Lucas says a lot at his shows, "Hip hop neva killed nobody-all it's done is made people filthy rich and improved their quality of life!" Lupe does another classic hear (Note to michaelhannah-BKA Young Son-I bet you're proud of fellow Twin Cities singa Nikki Jean doin' that hook!)
This is by far my favorite song on "The Cool." Lupe Fiaco's nerd rap isn't universal for all hip-hop fans, but instead it deeply touches the few who truly understand his music. The story telling in this record shows Lupe's improvement in capturing a message, bringing listener on journey from verse 1 to 2 to 3. Nikki Jean sings the hook perfectly, chopping up the syllables in-between sentences sounds pure and personal. I'm glad Lupe chose this as one of his singles, it makes a statement to everyone doubting the power of hip-hop.
ya a couple peeps said it, i'm not into lupa's delivery, but his rhymes and subject matter is good. this is a good song though, but its hard for me to get into his other stuff...
Easily one of the best songs off "The Cool", which is the BEST album out of '07. This guy is a true genius. He should for sure be a rep for Hip Hop VS America. Deserves to be the voice of the genre, right there was Nas.
One of the best songs i've heard in a long time. It's like unless you can't understand what hip hop is really supposed to be, you won't know that essentially every song Lupe has ever made for albums needs to get none less than 4 stars on a rating. This here is an a classic, instantly. 5 stars, no question. Nikki Jean from St. Paul, Minnesota adds such a great touch to the song and it's great to hear a new talent that will probably do some big things in the next decade here.
Oh, and if you want punchlines SBHS, you better go cop and download every single Lupe song ever. Period.
With the quality of "MUSIC" Lupe puts out I can understand why he would feel the need to step away from the politics of the industry and the lack of album sales 10+ years ago he would probably go diamond........
Everytime I play a Lupe track my speakers blow out on me. Let's see if I can salvage these set of speakers. This album is on point; most of it is solid.
good "song" - meaning you can actually hear what he is sayin and understand the lyrics... there needs to be more songs like this, not just the ice, rims, and girls most rappers talk about, and in most songs you can't even understand that... lupe is well educated and talented
...Undoubtedly one of the most talented rappers Lupe, and this track does have a meaning, from the music all the the way to the lyrics..It deserves much respect just for that! I dont know what else people are lookin fo! Lupe is part of the elite!
I think this one of the best true hip-hop tracks out now. The lyracism is amazing, the chorus is fire and the chorus matches perfect. Lupe is the truth right now keep doin ya thing.
One of the best Hip Hop songs of the year! You cannot deny that Lupe Fiasco is one of the greatest lyricists to date. I love his style and his creativity. Nikki Jean sounds awesome on the track too. This is one of my favorite songs on "The Cool."
