“Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither,” Benjamin Franklin. And if I’m starting off a post with some revolutionary political quotes than there’s a pretty good chance some new Lupe Fiasco has been unleashed upon the world. The first we’ve officially heard from Lupe’s highly anticipated album, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, new buzz single, Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free), should be instantly recognizable to hip-hop heads everywhere: the track finds producers Simonsayz and B-Side putting a light dusting on Pete Rock’s classic T.R.O.Y. beat, building the cut around that more classic than classic horn line. For his part, Lupe is at the height of his politically lyrical powers, touching on everything from drug trade around his way to depleted Sioux reservations to the international politics that keep a country like Ghana mired in violence and poverty. Lupe’s not pulling any punches with his one, which should be more than enough to get some of those hardcore Lupe supporters counting the days until the release on Food & Liquor II, due to arrive on September 25.

Aside from the fact that we get nothing new on the production tip, Lupe is, well, classic Lupe. Hip hop heads will rejoice and sing his praises, while the Atlantic brass prepares his "lead radio single" in the weeks to come.

not impressed. i mean, its THE lupe alright, subtract complex rhyming scheme, and his not very well made chorus'...but honestly, im not worried about the album at all. Lupe NEVER picks great first singles...and when i say never, i mean NEVER...except maybe Kick, Push (No idea if that was a first single or not)

The recycled production aside, I'm just relieved he didn't hit us with an "Angels & Stars". As always, Lu impresses with his verses.. definitely a banger. As of now, the album is supposed to drop on SEPT. 25th!!! Mark your calenders!!

To be honest, I'm sick of hearing those sampled horns. Heard them so much. Lupe is on point and it's a cool track but that production irritates me.

I am a pretty big Lupe fan, but this isn't what I was expecting. Lupe's flow is pretty good...the beat was rather average and the chorus was pretty weak. Just OK...I'm looking for more from Lupe...

The original is a classic thats hard to live up to, but Lupe drops some great verses on this and I like how they tweaked the TROY beat slightly.

This is solid. I don't think it's as intriguing as Lupe's previous singles, but it has a nice throwback vibe. I agree, the sample is oversaturated, I've heard it many times in different songs after TROY. But I think Lupe did it justice. Very excited for Food & Liquor II (though he has very high standards to live up to)

I lost respect for Pete Rock. Mad at Lupe for sampling a song that already had samples. Nigga should be happy Lil wayne ain't sample it. Instead of "Around My Way" it would be called "@*#$! sucked this way".

I still don't get why Pete Rock was so butthurt about this one. It's not like anybody stole his shit or anything... but whatever. "Around My Way" is classic Lupe and one of the standout tracks from his album number 4.
