There’s no doubt that Lloyd Banks had a hit with his first single, Beamer, Benz or Bentley, so how can he top that huge rider? Well, the addition of a Good Friday-esque line-up consisting of Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, Swizz Beatz and Fabolous on his new single Start It Up won’t hurt. Although you have three Grammy winning producers on the track, the record’s heavy drums yet poppy synthesizers come courtesy of hit producer Cardiak. Vocally, Banks starts the song, and while his flow may have changed a bit to fit the radio friendly groove it still goes hard, followed closely by a strong 16 from Kanye. Things really hit their groove with Ryan Leslie’s melodic background vocals, although Swizzy’s somewhat annoying hook ruins the mood. However, it’s when Fab comes in and bodies his verse that Start It Up really gets moving – in fact, you could argue Fab somewhat overshadows Lloyd on his own song. If hearing this next radio ready hit from the G-Unit member has worked up your appetite, be sure to check out his upcoming album, The Hunger for More 2, due out November 23.

When the beat dropped around the middle of the first verse, I changed my opinion from ok to above average. They all killed it.

It's REALLY official. Lloyd Banks is the only nice one out of G-Unit.

No hate, but I just don't have the same amount of love for this everyone else seems to. That Swizz hook is aggravating (Grown man making motorcycle noises? Really?) and I've heard better flows from Banks. Kanye and Loso smashed their sections though.
Dope track, I'll have it on repeat this weekend, but nothing to get that excited about.

Even the odd Motorcycle noises are more comical than annoying... Everyone adds something positive to the track and I think this could be a hit. Lloyd Banks is playing his cards nicely at the moment... The build-up to the album should be an interesting one

The production on here is SICK! I am really feeling this track. Lloyd Banks has been Spazzin out on Beats lately. Swizz Chorus is pretty cool. Kanye is Kanye...what more can I say? He hurt it too (as usual). This is 5-Star GENERAL $hit right here!

I feel out of place here, but Im not feeling this track as much as everyone else is. I think the production just isnt on point for me. Repetitive to me. I could enjoy it more without the constant electric sound in the back.

The hook from Swizz Beatz is shocking, it completely ruined this track for me. Think up a more original hook and get rid of Swizz Beatz and this would of been at least a banger

I kinda wish that Fabolous' verse was placed before Swiss Beats' little portion of the track. By the time Fab gets going I keep thinking the song's over.

Lol - was Swizz makin the cycle noises with his mouth? OMG - Should have went to the ghosts of RuffRyders to lace this track - Ye' had me going WTF and rewinding his verses - he kilt this! Banks was kewl - he flipped his style but it wasn't original - Fab was just Fab as usual - Had potential but guess is a keeper.

Cardiak's "not unique in its composition" but "gets better the more you crank it" production is more than competent, but Swizzy on hook is never a good sign. But, quite simply, much like "Beamer, Benz or Bentley", the hook is a guilty pleasure. Written with a lively sense of humour and a keen knowledge of what today's youngsters would find swaggerific within the context of hip-hop. I guess that helps to make up for the fact that Swizzy's vocals will never be mistaken for great, or even remotely likeable.
Now, of course Kanye West is so distinguishable that he stands out on this one but not because the others are bad verses, by any means. Quite frankly, both Lloyd Banks and Fabolous lacks the personality that makes Kanye West so interesting to hip-hop heads. And who doesn't want to soak in every single one of Kanye West's ridiculous punchlines? That being said, if I had to rank the verses... Kanye West = Fabolous > Lloyd Banks |
