Lil Wayne - Run this Town [Freestyle]
Artist: Lil Wayne
Producer: No I.D.
Album: No Ceilings Mixtape
Label: Cash Money/Universal Motown
Arguably not since Muhammad Ali has an international star gone to jail while he was the undisputed greatest at his craft (apologies to T.I.), but that’s exactly the situation facing Weezy, who’s expecting an approximately one-year prison sentence shortly on gun possession charges. Well, if Wayne’s going out for a while at least he’s leaving behind a hell of a catalog. The latest and greatest addition to the Carter legacy is the brand new Run This Town [Freestyle], a cut that takes Jay’s smash hit and flips it into a lyrically driven devastator, complete with lines like “The crown fit, I ain’t even gotta try on. / The pistol mean business, that b**ch should have a tie on.” (Umm…about that pistol…) No matter the outcome, at least Wayne’s ensuring that we’ve got more than enough flows to keep us occupied for eight months or so. The Run This Town freestyle is the latest leak off of Weezy F.’s upcoming No Ceilings mixtape, set to drop later this week.

Weezy snapped on this, job well done and great to hear him back in his mixtape mode where he delivers the best hip hop. With such a recognizable beat like this, it's hard not to be singing Jay's verse in your head while listening, but Weezy actually had me focused on him solely. Banger, can't wait for the mixtape dropping on Halloween.

Everything off "No Ceilings" that has leaked thus far is BETTER than the original version. No bullsh*t. However, I hope everyone can contain themselvs when this mixtape drops - it won't be the best thing since sliced bread, so lets not treat it that way. Ok? Kay.

i will say this freestyle would have over ran anyother rapers song. but Jay owned this beat and to me i kept thinking "we are year i said that we are" - its just too distinct adn attached to Hov so Weezy looses!!! sory - so i disagree with CB anyone elc agree with me?
on a brighter night i loved th end!!! |

Now this is the Wayne I fell in love with. He kinda fell off lyrically in the last year but this shows that he's returning to his greatness.
To be honset, Kanye's rap was better than this and that Rihanna hook hit my head once the beat dropped so I prefer the orginial more. But this is the best freestyle I've heard out of anyones yet. |

Wayne is serious in this track. like everyone said, this is a step up from everything he's done in a min. BUT i dont like this as much as the original (which eventually grew on me.) so rotation. 3.5 stars.

On a controversial note, going to prison right now is one of the best things that could happen to Weezy. Why you ask? He's going down the road of many a great artist, he's smoking his brains out with that crack and doing too much X.

I thought Wayne sounded great on this. I always love him in freestyle form because he comes up with some dope lines. Real creative lyrics.

MENILIK: sorry but i disagree with you, i think kanye owned the beat, and jay was terrible like every song on his album except for one or maybe two (2 is a long stretch) i dislike jay z after bp3, never really liked him but now i dont like him even more

If Jay didn't have to worry so much about selling I wonder if he could have made Run This Town this creative...actually, I doubt it. When Wayne snaps there's no one else alive that can keep up with him. He's got one of the most unique flows hip-hop has ever seen, and this one is definitely going in the Weezy pantheon of dope tracks. Free Lil Wayne!

Between this, "Swag Surfin", and "Wasted" I am for the first time in 09, really really excited about any of Lil Wayne's project. Not that I was disappointed by "Carter 3" but right after a week by that, he got too comfortable with his lyrics and far too dependable on Auto-tune.
But after hearing these freeverses I'm looking forward to hearing more of the Wayne alot of us miss. His unpredictable rhymes are back. I think his upcoming jail stint/a few days sober should help him gain some clarity and focus. |

Bangin! Weezy's one of the select few who has mastered the art of pure free styling and song writing. And more importantly separating the two.

let the debate begin, who ripped this track more wayne or joell ortiz. im not gonna lie wayne went in on this beat. this is the classic wayne that a lot of people want to hear. but i disagree wit nathan on that wayne did go off on this but joell completely blacked out on the track. i personally think that if u put joell and wayne on the same song and told them to come up wit their a+ game joell would smash wayne.
this is still a 4 though. |

Since someone else decided to make the Joell Ortiz v. Wayne comparison I have to say to the contrary that Weezy when he is like this is untouchable. He has better breath control and he rides the beat impeccably. Weezy for me made me forget towards the middle that this was a Jay-Z song and made me forget this was a freestyle. The same couldn't be said for Mr. Ortiz even though he still spat flamez.

my only problem is that wayne followed the flow jay used on this song to much for me not to get it confused at times wit the jay-z one. ortiz came wit his own flow and not one borrowed from the original. none then less both artist still demolished the track

Wayne went hard.....but I have to agree 1_O-TYME_1: the bp3 was a big let down. With tracks like hater which had some of the worst lyrics i've ever heard. But back to the topica at hand.....Wayne was good. Prefer wasted n swag surfin over this (wayne mix)

I am going to admit, I hated most of the songs from his other album but this new CD No Ceilings has only Bangers. The Ice Cream Paint Job freestyle is also a Banger.
