Lil Scrappy - Look at Me
Artist: Lil Scrappy
Producer: Dre Skull
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: G's Up/The Grustle Gang
The title of Lil Scrappy‘s latest promo single, Look at Me, presented by Mixpak Records, might make it sound like ATL emcee is simply begging for attention, but don’t be deceived… he really is begging for attention. Fortunately, he does so in an eminently entertaining manner. Backed by Big Apple beatsmith Dre Skull‘s stern string hits and quirky percussion, the Swoop Swoop emcee delivers an exhaustive rundown of his many assets – from obvious points of pride such as his girl, his house, his gun and his bankroll, to smaller, but equally crucial blessings like the fact that he is alive, with his very own clothes on his back and a head on his shoulders. While I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of “I have my own shoes,” as a pickup line, I think we can all take inspiration from Scrappy’s take-nothing-for-granted attitude – not to mention his off-the-charts swagger. Will this Southern street banger perform as intended and attract the attention Scrappy needs in order to get his long-awaited fourth full-length, Tha Grustle, onto record store shelves? Only time will tell but, in the meantime, Booth readers are welcome to speculate…

Despite the fact that Scrappy's career his flatlined over the past few years (no shots, just the impression I get), the man has two undeniable abilities - the selection of banging production (he always picks solid beats to work with) and the infusion of infectious energy within his music. Say what you want about his lyrical matter and his style, his delivery and ear for music are both on point. I cannot hate.

No DTP credit under label? Was Scrappy dropped? I saw Luda live last night and he introduced the DTP crew and no Scrap in sight. What's the deal?
Nice track. The production is nice and Scrappy's flow was on point. |

Why does artist say Lil Boosie? For me this is a bit repetitive, Lil Scrappy is decent but the whole package is forgettable

Love the production; although this is definitely not gonna chart on Billboard, something around the third verse makes me kinda bored (I expected some guest rapper to drop in)

I don't know, what do you really say about this one. It's formulaic and I don't think anyone's walking away from it impressed by Scappy's lyrical ability, but it wasn't made to be the next NY State of Mind. It was made so you could nod your head, and by that measure it's a success.
p.s. - Sorry for the confusion. The artist was originally, obviously accidentally, listed as Lil Boosie. It's been corrected. |
