Laws - Target Practice
Artist: Laws
Featuring: Joe Budden
Producer: Black Metaphor
Album: 4:57 (Overtime Edition)
Label: Unsigned
Where other rappers take the shotgun blast approach, Booth favorite (and freestyle series participant) Laws is more of a lyrical sharpshooter. How did he develop his knack for nailing details with pinpoint accuracy? Well, in addition to reading a lot of Stephen King, he doesn’t slack off when it comes to Target Practice. The latest leak off his forthcoming 4:57 re-release finds the artist teaming up with another underground talent known for killing tracks: after Laws laces Black Metaphor‘s brass-sampled beat with his brand of casually clever braggadocio, Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden jumps on board to inform us just what he has in store for sucker emcees: “Steppin’ to them’s an expected win / when I slam you can notify the next of kin.” The extended, tagless Overtime edition of Laws’ 4:57 mixtape (the original version is still available here for streaming and free download) has yet to receive a solid release date, but we’ll keep you posted.

lyrical depth track after track from laws. 4:57 was an amazing mixtape and the re-release should make it even better if this is just the beginning of it.

And another one! Sorry Joey, but LAWS outshined ya here. I hate to brag - you know we don't do that - but remember who co-signed this man's on-the-mic skills first.
Oh, and if you haven't, go download his 4:57 mixtape... available here at the Booth! |

Damn. Laws never disappoints. He's not quite my "future favorite rapper" but he's got some serious talent. I enjoyed Budden on the track as well.

laws hymmmm that flow is killaaa and that beat is a intrumantal anthemmm. loving that techno edge to the beat, sorta like a clash low vibration that doesnt fizzle out.
anyways TMI flow is crazy from laws, maybe im stepping out on a big limb here but some of the punchlines in this song make me feel like im listenin to EM. and all in all its in rotation for me. beat draws me in and flow captures my mind but it doesnt have what it takes for me to call it a banger (my type taste) 3.5 for me definatly 3spins wouldnt argue if it was given 4 though! |

Damn, it's unanimous then? Laws out rhymes Budden? Damn. That's not exactly US over Russia level upset, but it's pretty damn significant. The Booth just can't get enough of Laws, and I'd have to agree.
On a related note, shouts to the homey DJ Z for the dope Laws interview. If you haven't listened to it yet, shame on you. Shame. |

When it comes to lyrics, Laws wins...
When it comes to flow and presence on the mic, Joe Budden takes the cake... That beat is clean, you can't help but feel this one. |

Laws>Budden on this track, most of the internet community disagree with this statement (except for the djbooth community), but its the obvious truth. I thought the production was pretty dope to be honest.
Overall, a good look for all involved. |

Both Laws and Joe left me on rewind to hear it a few more times for full effect, and Black Metaphor does his job by creating a belligerent tone but beat's repetitive brass-line has a tendency to get tedious quickly. Still, Rotation fa sho!

I gave it 5 Stars.. not just because Laws is my homey.. but he's real dope. I've seen him come up on the battle circuit in FLA when he first started rhyming to making a lot of noise in the industry latley. Proud of my man... Laws is a beast with the lyrics.. he goes in hard on this joint and shines along side industry vet, Joe Budden. "...it ain't been the same since Puffy said 'Take That' on an ADAT" .. so true...

Laws sounds a little like Lupe to me...and he went absolutely nuts on this one. Budden's verse was nothing to brag about even though it wasn't horrible. Laws was the shining star on his own track which is a good thing and the production work was on point as well.

It is a pretty straight song, but the beat is lacking. It needs both the emcees and the instrumentals to complement each other for a stellar record.

Dag Joey why can't you come out the gate swingin like this on your own material? Laws lays it down and Joe does his thing like it's his own track. Props if he can get swag removed from the dictionary because im tired of that manufactured word too.

Love the flow of the song. Laws does a great job of keeping the song moving at a fast pace and Joey does his part. Not his best verse but definitely had some good one liners in there. Overall a great track and I am impressed with Laws verses, definitely have to keep my eye on him.

Anyone who does better than my man Joey on a track gets a free pass for my radar!!! Great flow!
They both delivered nice lyrics and the beat is a nice ride, though the brass could use a rest or different touch. |
