Lawrence Arnell - Nothin' Less
Artist: Lawrence Arnell
Featuring: Reef the Lost Cauze
Producer: OJay
Album: Promo Single
Label: SoFlo Entertainment
Booth newcomer Lawrence Arnell is well aware that his musical ambitions are immodest – he simply doesn’t care. As the rising star informs us in this newly-released promo single, he hopes to earn a place as Nothin’ Less than one of the greatest emcees to ever rock a mic. Over the head-noddin, piano-led instrumental stylings of producer OJay, the Philly native lays all his cards on the table: “You can hire me or fire me / but it won’t take long for you to realize you require me.” Equally determined to leave an indelible mark on the rap game, fellow Philadelphian rhymesayer Reef the Lost Cauze brings a grittier, more abstract lyrical touch to the track’s middle portion: “We went from the pyramids to projects / West Philly where I rep, man, it’s too complex.” So, Booth readers, does Lawrence Arnell have the skills to back up his lofty ambitions? If you think so, keep it locked for all the latest from this talented up-and-comer.

This record was the first I had heard of Larry Arnell, but the impression did the job - he got a Booth feature. The sample used by OJay has been used several times before - any help on where, I am drawing a blank? - but its just as catchy this time around.
Solid record. |

Not sure about this record. The sample seems really familiar but it isn't bad. All in all though, just not feeling this record.

There is way too many talented hip hop artists out there I have yet to listen to or for that matter even hear of. Lawrence Arnel is no longer one of them! 3.5.

i like the light hearted beat and it has soulful drums that come in after the intro which are nice.
nothing less sounds like hes staking claim to something it sounds like it should be gritty, if so, it definitly feels outa place with the beat though. rythem is excellent and word play is a fun listen plus the instrumental is something you dig well but it issnt suited for this track. i like this song but even as i try to get into it even more, theres this block that i cant figure out because this song has a message, good beat, and produced well but its all done for not i guess i give it 3 spins, only play this song would have on my mp3 player is when shuffle jumps to it. |

Man once the beat got going there's no stopping the head nodding!!
Lyrics were also on point....but the production took the spotlight on this track for me.... |

This was just an ok song. I loved the old school beat but it sounded very generic there was not much originality to this song

Lawrence is one arrogant dude but he actuallys puts up and certainly doesnt shut up "im here to add my name to the greatest mcs"--thats a real statement of intent that must be backed up and he doesnt dissapoint. he goes in with noteworthy wordplay and lyrics that punch you in the face and tell you to LISTEN< dj haled voive> Reef to me isnt reaally needed and was kinda average and is prolly the only let down apart from the kinda average production so its 3 stars for me
in rotation right now on my itunes |

This is why I love DJBooth so much...We always get to hear a new artist that is rather unknown...This is my first time ever hearing something from Lawrence but my first impression of him is that he can lyrically spit. The beat is just average to me, but Arnell more then makes up for it...with that being said I expect "Nothin Less" from him in the future.

Production is pretty reminiscent of 50 Cent's Ghetto Quran track from back when he was actually good, so that alone is a plus.
Lawrence Arnell absolutely destroys this track. Looking around at all the low ratings I'm kinda confused. Were we all listening to the same track cause this was some good shit. Could definitely see myself replaying this in the future. |

Another hypnotic piano backed song, and I am really digging it. Definitely a driving song and even song you can bob your head to.
Chorus is nicely done as well, its not too much and is really fluid. Lyrics are also solid and leave their mark on the listener. Definitely not a song that will be for everyone but it will find its crowd. I love songs that end unexpectedly like that. It really helps the listener to remember what the last line in the song was and leaves its mark. Solid effort by both LA and Reef on this one. |

Djbooth.net spoiled my ears and I expect nothin less from the indies and come ups and this track is no surprise steamin fresh dope ish ..thanks for droppin who tricked out the middle, his verse was the illest but Law brought the heat 2, double assasins over a ill beat!

Law has a pretty good voice... a little gruff without straying into *shudder* Ja Rule territory. The rhymes come smoothly and with relaxed confidence.
But (and it's a big but), I wouldn't be able to identify Arnell's voice if this came into rotation...it doesn't really sound unique, and it doesn't have the flair of someone like K Sparks or B.o.B. The hook is just plain boring. I couldn't identify it until the second time I listened to it. I couldn't tell it apart from the verses. The hook gives a track substance, so it has to be well defined. In this case, it wasn't, so the whole track suffers for it. It sounded like one big freestyle. I'll give it two stars for the catchy beat. I love Ojay's laid back piano and and the subtle synth horns in the background with some lighthearted metallophone thrown in for an extra airy feel. Great background music because of the catchy beat, but otherwise this track's not exceptional. There's better to be had out there. I say skip it. |

The production here is cool, but fails to improve on the Smilez and Southstar version "Tell Me". This is a good all around track, but doesn't separate itself enough to do much as a single.

This song is nothin' but ok to me. Not feeling it really. The old school beat is the only thing I really liked in this production.

He makes a good all important first impression. He has my ear, what will he follow up with?
His sureness is at least half believable cuz he back himself up with a deep quick flow. |

@DJ Z, Ja Rule, and Ashanti used the sample back in their glory days. The track was decent. I like the vocal and music. I would like to hear more though. Maybe something with a bit more of the wow factor.

Way too overused sample right here (Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye
Stop, Look, Listen), but still both Lawrence and Reef leave a nice first impression. The strong delivery and rhymes are enough to keep me hooked for a few more spins. |
