Kyle Lucas - Cut Me Down
Artist: Kyle Lucas
Producer: Simon Illa
Album: Purple Cloud Thoughts EP
Label: Purple Ribbon Records
Though feelings of angst and self-doubt have been Kyle Lucas’ lyrical bread and butter for much of his Booth career, it’s getting harder and harder to ignore the Purple Ribbon repper’s successes—from his wildly-acclaimed Captain Midnite collab The Sky Is Falling and I’m Fine to his recent gig at Lollapalooza, the man’s been doing pretty damn well for himself. Perhaps relatedly, the Marietta, Georgia native’s traded the harrowing tone of his recent work for something considerably more chill on Cut Me Down, the inaugural leak off his next project. Here, beatsmith Simon Illa flips Adele’s Tired into a headphone-ready, old-school-informed instrumental backdrop as Lucas resolves to turn over a new leaf of positivity: “It’s a nice warm day out, water with some lemon / Got me wonderin’ why I’m thinkin’ ‘bout this music stressin’ / Wonder why I’m second guessin’ when it’s a blessing just to be here, / ‘specially when there’s weed here.” While those old doubts do creep back in (“Are people really my friends, or tryin’ to benefit?”), the overall effect is refreshingly mellow and upbeat. Like what you’re hearing? More Purple Cloud Thoughts await on the freestyle alum‘s next EP, dropping this Wednesday, October 26.

Kyle has improved his rhyme work at a consistent level for the past four or so years. He has a dynamic control over his vocals and knows what production styles best suit his sound and emotion. Lets hope the entire EP sounds like this.

I like the production on here and the sample for the chorus is nice too. I like Kyle's flow on the track. Nice work... I'll throw it into rotation.

It might be because I'm also from Georgia, but this guy just has a certain untold greatness about hum.

The energy on this song is way on point, but the rest was a little "eh" to me. Solid though.
