As Shakespeare said, a name is just a name, for a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet, but when I take a look at my inbox and see a line up like Kyle Lucas, Captain Midnite and Murder Dice I can’t help but take notice. Seriously. Those are some bad a** names. Thankfully, the trio’s new single Take It Apart proves to be every bit as original as their monikers by seamlessly combining a darkly pacing beat with some straight up hip-hop flows. The former (the production) comes courtesy of Midnite, who combines a distorted piano with pounding percussion to head nodding effect, while the later (the flows) comes from Lucas, who unleashes some drug fueled but impressively clear verses. Throw in a rock-tinged hook from Dice and you’ve got a song that’s as attention grabbing as the artists involved. Even better, Lucas and Midnite’s work ethic is as strong as their musical skills – the duo will be playing Lollapalooza this summer and offering their upcoming EP The Sky is Falling And I’m Fine on DJBooth for free two days before it goes on sale at iTunes (and DJBooth) on August 2.
