Genius” is a label slung about so frequently that it’s hard to figure out exactly what it means—personally, I think it’s a marketing ploy cooked up to sell books of incredibly boring logic puzzles. Be that as it may,  Krizz Kaliko‘s audacious (read: ballsy) decision to bestow the title upon himself can only bode well for his sophomore LP.  Considering the embarrassment potential of releasing a bad album titled Genius, the Kansas City native and frequent Tech N9ne collaborator must know he’s got something great up his sleeve, and new single Misunderstood backs that conjecture up.  From Kaliko and co-producer Michael “Seven” Summers’ ‘60s psychedelia-influenced beat, complete with a groovy, Time of the Season-esque keyboard solo, to the artist’s bouncy flow, to his breathy sung hook, this head-bobbing pop concoction drips with left-of-center crossover appeal (see Gnarls Barkley).  Less time-consuming and much more fun than a book of Mensa brainteasers, Misunderstood is sure to stir up anticipation for the July 14th release of Krizz’ second LP.  In the meantime, though, keep it locked to the Booth for DJ Z‘s exclusive video interview with K.K., shot backstage at ‘09’s Rock the Bells opener.

Truly talented artist with one helluva back story (which he shared with me last Saturday at Rock The Bells). Love the eclectic vibe here. This isn't really a "hip hop" record, but that is precisely why I love it.

Damn. Strange Music is just full of talent. Krizz is an amazing artist. His first album blew me away. It's a shame Krizz is doomed to live in Tech's shadow. However, if this track is any indication, he can definitely cast his own shadow as well.

This was tight. Gonna have to agree with Z when he said "This isn't really a "hip hop" record, but that is precisely why I love it." Always gotta lot of respect for artists tryin something creative. He is now on my radar.

Krizz IS a genius. Dude can sing his ass off. He is truly a talented lyricist. Being under Tech N9ne for a while now, he's only grown as an Artist. It sounds like he'll be taking a different approach with this Album, and I love what I'm hearing so far!!

Def has a Gnarls Darkley feel to it. Which unfortunately doesn't make this unique, which is what i think Krizz is going for here. This does make my head nod, and his flow is good. This is solid.

Yah the entire time I listened; I couldn't help to think of Cee-Lo Green; the flow, the vocals and the interesting production. As BDF pointed out it isn't as unique as some are quick to point out...It's still hot but he may go from being in Tech's shadow to tugging on Cee-Lo's coattails.

Can't thank Strange enough for the wonderful, harmonious, unique experience. Krizz, as well as Strange, is a freight train with no brakes barrelin' through the industry. All aboard!!! Congrats on your success.

I love this quirky-but-smooth music! My first thought (before reading the blurb) was Cee-Lo. The vocals were equal parts soulful, funky, and smooth. The flow was a perfect fit and the keyboard solo was just a sick addition to the track. GREAT/strange music!

GENIUS very well might be the perfect name for Kali's sophomore album. I got my CD pre-ordered from krizzkaliko.com, can't wait to hear the rest!

Different in a good way. Like Andre 3000 different, like Gnarls Barkley different. Originally strange Music is not misunderstood here. I love it.
