As shown by the rave reviews and impressive sales numbers Raheem DeVaughn, Raphael Saadiq, and Maxwell all earned for their most recent albums, classic male R&B is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. With the August 4th release of his major-label debut, I Get Around, Motown-born and bred singer K’Jon is looking to ride that timeless sound to similar success. The LP’s second single is the definition of “crossover appeal.” On This Time, K’Jon describes a dream in which in he and his woman have broken up—upon waking, the singer realizes how blessed he is to still have her around, and resolves to no longer take her for granted. Listen to the singer’s semi-raspy vocals, along with his and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen producer Proteus’ sweeping instrumental (complete with a children’s choir) and just TRY telling us this track wouldn’t sound good over a movie’s closing credits—a Diet Rite says you can’t. Expect I Get Around to dominate charts despite the lack of heavy label label promo; music this good doesn’t need industry shenanigans to find an audience.

I have to completely agree on the 'crossover appeal' comment. I'm somewhat torn with the instrumental music, it doesn't have the strict RnB sound. It's more of a contemporary/folksy (dare I say the intro was borderline country...) and progressing into a gospel feel later on.
For me, the music selection is quite unique. But without question, the vocals sound fantastic, he has a great voice for this kind of track. Dude was definitely emoting his verses throughout, solid track for me. |

Gotta agree with RnB/Soul music expert @Obecalp - that intro IS country music style and it does have a sound of more of a contemporary/folksy music with those violins but its all good as this is completely different from ANYTHING else I've heard in a loooong while.
Maybe not for everyone but its absolute good music. |

It's a soulful song but I've heard better melodies. His voice is similar to that of the main singer of the Lighthouse Family! Love the part of the choir, really intense. 3,5

I am very happy with this as the follow up track to "Ocean." K'Jon did an excellent show at the "Funk Fest" in Charleston, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation before the album. So, I am looking forward to seeing him with a complete roster of songs. May God bless him and his family.
