Kingpen Slim - My Life Is a Movie
Artist: Kingpen Slim
Featuring: Jim Jones
Producer: DJ JButtah
Album: The Beam Up 2
Label: Beam Up Ent.
I don’t know about y’all, but if my life was a movie it’d be a cross between American Gangster and Top Gun. OK, so I’m not actually a millionaire drug dealer and fighter pilot, but they don’t make any movies about hip-hop writers. Thankfully, DJBooth Freestyle alumnus Kingpen Slim doesn’t need to fictionalize his life at all for his new cut My Life is a Movie. As he says, “instead of being based on a true story, it’s a true story.” Originally featured on Jim Jones’ Ghost of Rich Porter mixtape, this fully mastered version of My Life features two additional verses to enhance the original’s appropriately cinematic and smooth production from DJ JButtah and Jones’ impressive lyrical output (which have now become a guest verse). For his part, Kingpen puts together some fascinating autobiographical work, touching on everything from his criminal past to his impending rise through the rap ranks. Call a date, grab some popcorn and take a seat; Kingpen Slim’s upcoming mixtape Beam Up 2 is set to drop right here on DJBooth July 28. And, action…

I wasn't a fan of the earlier leaked version where Jones took center stage, but now that Mr. Slim gets the spotlight on him I am a much bigger fan. All hail the production work of JButtah, who should get some nice looks as a result of this one.

This beat is AMAZING, the verses and hook though are alright but they don't do the beat justice. Kingpen has some real lyrics, but i'm just not that into his flow.

Unlike DJ Z, I was a fan of the original too - I thought Jim Jones' lyrics have improved substantially, and that beat's top shelf. I've got no problem with Kingpen taking the lead here, his flow's engaging and the storytelling's tight. A solid track from top to bottom.

This kingpen guy really was just okay for me. Jim Jones outshines easily in one verse to his three.
The production was great on this song, which it would have to be because I was ready to 1-star this automatically for being apart of the new, annoying trend; "My life is a movie". |
