You know you’re marching to the beat of your own drummer when you can flip a record into reverse and it doesn’t sound any crazier than it did the right way ‘round. Such is the feat that Kid CuDi seems to have accomplished with his latest unreleased joint, Dennis, Hook Me Up With Some More of This Whiskey! Premiered yesterday evening via Complex, the record sees Scott Mescudi looking backwards in more ways than one: not only does he hark back to Man on the Moon II inclusion GHOST!, layering additional drums and guitars over a mirrored version of its queasy yet catchy synth backdrop, the artist revisits the more conventional “flows” of his earlier work. Lyrically, this joint can also be interpreted as a reversal of its predecessor. Whereas GHOST! depicted the spitter as a shell of his former self, unsure if there’s any fight left in him, this joint finds him feeling revitalized (if intoxicated): “Pop a molly, feelin’ 10 again / Project X type weekend, except I’m damn near 30. / Like 21 will never end; here I go with my second wind.” While this joint isn’t attached to any forthcoming project, its theme of rebirth points to more new music in the near future. In the meantime, fans who haven’t already copped the set can hear more from Cudder on his recently-released “rock” side-project, WZRD.
