While heads with a taste for the spacey and surreal often look to Atlanta’s ever-innovative scene for their hip-hop needs, Peach State natives don’t have a monopoly on out-of-this-world beats and rhymes. With Now Inside, a standout track off his latest full-length, Booth newcomer Khemist provides compelling evidence that Philly can be just as eccentrically fresh. Backed by Squizzy‘s woozy, chopped-soul sample boardwork, the up-and-comer gives us a guided tour of a world beyond ours; a world packed with bouncy flows and free-associated braggadocio. Khemist’s creative lyrical sensibility, along with the gritty instrumental vibe add up to a cut with undeniable left-of-center appeal, but the artist doesn’t neglect to include a few words for the haters: “Damn sure it ain’t something that you’re gonna rebel against / if you do, then your mind is a caged pelican.” Touché! If that unusual diss doesn’t apply to you, you can hear plenty more where this came from on the artist’s EPPD (Exotic Prodigy Pluto Distributors) LP, released June 29, and out now online.

Welcome to the Booth, Khemist. While his flow - at times - is a little raw and unpolished, his delivery is mostly on point and his production selection (in this case, Squizzy) here is excellent. I am feeling generous...

Wasn't really feeling it, all though I liked the voice. The drums were too loud comparing to his voice, seemed like they were louder than his vocals were. Good flow though, i'm ready to see what other stuff he has.

Hmmmm....I had to let this play a couple times before I could really get a handle on it. I'm definitely intrigued - the man's got a unique style, and in today's game that's something to be proud of. This track needs a little polishing, but I can hear some real potential here.
I'm down to hear some more Khemist, let's make it happen. |

This is really hot, the beat is chopped up ever so nicely. His flow goes great with this beat. I like everything except for the hook. The hook is missing something, but everything else is great. Would be a hot remix if he had someone like Lupe, or B.O.B on it too. 4 stars!

Nothing here really felt organized at all. Production went left, and Khemist went the other way.
