Khalil - Girlfriend Ringtone
Artist: Khalil
Producer: Sean Garrett and L.O.S. da Maestro
Album: Hot Like Summer
Label: Worldwide Ent./Def Jam Recordings
If you immediately recognize DJBooth newcomer Khalil’s new single Girlfriend Ringtone, I don’t know whether to be impressed by your encyclopedic memory, or a little worried that you spend too much time on the Booth. (Naw, you can never spend too much time in the Booth.) Let me cut to the chase. While the sparkling production from Sean Garrett and L.O.S. da Maestro was originally slated for Garrett’s Turbo 919 album, the song’s since found its way into Khalil’s capable hands; hands which have crafted Girlfriend Ringtone into a hit. Vocally the young Def Jam crooner walks the same well tread ground of the Marios and Chris Browns before him, and does so with skill, laying down a pop-infused ode to young love (and I mean like 15-years-old “young”). While I can only assume Khalil’s debut album Hot Like Summer will drop, you know, this summer, it technically has no release date, so in the meantime fans will have to content themselves with making Girlfriend Ringtone their ringtone.

When we featured Sean Garrett's version of this record about two years ago, most of the comments from our members indicated that the song would be a hit without Garrett's mediocre vocals (their words, not mine). Thus, it makes perfect sense that Khalil was given the keys to this car, since his range and appeal could help drive it toward a potential hit. We shall see...

A new Justin Bieber mixed in with a little Chris Brown... nice. After the first minute or so, I was really starting to get irritated by this kid's vocals. He isn't bad, but as far as the concept goes, this track really didn't make me jump out of my seat. Make's me feel like I am back in high school again. 2.5

He sounds JUST like Chris Brown, which off the back is a quick turn off. Then he continues on with a concept that I have heard millions of times before. So all in all, this song is hella recyclable. NEXXXXTTT

What can I say? Not my type of track, but its intended audience (teen, radio, etc.) will eat this up. I don't know if I've heard enough from Khalil to make any real assessment, but here he certainly sounds like a promising young singer. You can start hyperventilating now ladies.
