Keri Hilson - One Night Stand

While her latest album No Boys Allowed has performed decently Keri Hilson is still looking for that one monster hit to catapult her back into music’s elite (a la Knock You Down and Turning Me On). Could it be new single One Night Stand? In a word, maybe. Manning the boards is Charlie Bereal, who constructs what can only be described as a Timbaland-esque beat filled with rolling synths and (muted cow bell?) percussion. Whatever the influence, the beat’s hypnotic, and those not completely committed to maintaining their thug image will undoubtedly find their heads nodding. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that Hilson delivers an engaging vocal performance, even if she does get somewhat overshadowed on her own record by Chris Brown, who continues his recuperation with some somewhat surprisingly grown man vocals. So how about it Booth nation; will this be the single that has Keri’s name on America’s lips again, or is it just another good-not-great offering from the hip-hop princess? Either way, those simply looking for good music should check out No Boys Allowed, out now.

I was personally in favor of the J. Cole-assisted "Buyou" as the next single, but Keri didn't call and ask for my opinion. Brown's vocals are quite uninspired here (feels like he is going through the pop manufacturing process) and that weighs down the record. I'd doubt this works as a follow-up to her current hit single ("Pretty Girl Rock").

This is actually okay. I think, considering Rihanna is red-hot now, the RiRi-influenced "Lose Control" might not be a bad idea, as terrible as Nelly's verse is.
'Buyou' would be my second pick for the next single. Extremely generic, but could be a good look for Cole on the radio. |

Can't really see this one making a big impact at radio, maybe this can live on 106 and Park lol. And contrary to the blurb, I think Pretty Girl Rock has finally reached the level of her past singles. This was a little too slow for me, and adding CB didn't really add to the track in any way.

Wasn't too keen on Pretty Girl Rock but it did a lot better than I expected. Can't say I'm keen on this either. I have to agree with Buyou being a better choice

This is the perfect single choice (In my opinion). The fans were asking for this too! This should do it for Keri, wasn't really feeling that Pretty Girl Rock.

This is unequivocally not a good choice for a single and it won't certainly succeed on the charts like the "Pretty Girl Rock".

Keri Hilsons album is highly under-rated, its pretty good, some good tracks. But i think this track is a bit of a let down, too much of Chris Brown.
But not to bad, 3 stars. |

Put this one in the "I kind of don't want to like it but I can't help myself" category. It may not make music history, but it gets in your head and makes you tap your feet, and that's exactly what a good pop record should do.

Sounds dated...Like a 2002 Timbo swagger jack. I think the problem is that Keri is talented but doesn't have an identity carved out as an artist yet. She's not engaging. This song doesn't help. Feels like she's chasing hits instead of making something timeless.

Mediocre..it does have the head-poppin beat but was too slow for me.
I don't see this reaching the past-material level CB does sound like he's dropped in the manufactured safe zone and therefore why he takes control of this song. |
