Dunson - Top of the World
Artist: Dunson
Producer: Kenton Dunson
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: Unsigned
Having set the Interwebs on fire with his latest street album, Kenton Dunson‘s undoubtedly feeling On Top of the World right about now. Of course, getting there is only half the battle—the real trick is staying in your newfound position of prominence. Judging by the Maryland emcee’s latest promo single, he’s more than up to the challenge; while his head may be in the clouds, the artist’s not resting on his laurels. As usual, Dunson does double-duty on the mic and behind the boards, cooking up a dreamily stuttering synth instrumental (sampled from indie-electronic group Passion Pit‘s The Reeling) to back his starstruck yet clear-sighted declarations of purpose. As he puts it on the back,: “I am on the move, I am on the move / They say these lights will blind you but they brighten up my view.” Though this joint isn’t included on the project, those who need more Kenton Dunson in their lives can find what they seek on Creative Destruction 2, released in early July and out now online. In addition, fans should watch for the official video for reader-approved cut Firestarter to hit the ‘net in the near future.

After a few listens I have come to two conclusions about the song. First, the production is overpowering. I am not saying that Kenton doesnt have the vocal chops, but the beat is just a little outside his true comfort zone. Second, there is a lot of promise for this song with a reputable emcee jumping on the end for a hot 16.

Been Dunson's #1 fan here recently. Especially with Creative Destruction 2, but i'm not feeling this. Like Z said the production is too much, and just off. Still a fan but he needs to get back to the kind of stuff we heard on Creative Destruction 2.

I'm biased.. but love how Kenton flipped Passion Pit's "The Reeling." "Sleepyhead" by them has been sampled before it is nice to hear one of their other tracks made into a Hip Hop track.
