Take one of the most buzzed-about new artists in the industry, throw him top of a smooth sample, add some trunk-rattling bass, leave to cook in the Cali sun, garnish with the guest bars of a living hip-hop legend and voilà—you’ve got a smash-hit debut single on your hands. The inaugural release off Kendrick Lamar‘s freshman set, The Recipe is a suitably spectacular coming-out party for the Los Angeles phenom and longtime Booth fave. Scoop Deville performs one of the most ingenious sample flips I’ve heard in a long minute, spinning the opening lines of indie-rockers Twin Sister’s sleepy Meet the Frownies into the centerpiece of a slow-rolling West Coast groove, garnished with pizzicato hooks and catchy string flourishes. Lamar keeps it swagged-out yet chill on the lyrical tip, oozing self-confidence as he rhapsodizes about the “women, weed and weather” that make his hometown heaven on earth. Dr. Dre (Executive Producer of Kendrick’s LP) concurs with his young homie’s assessment on the front, evoking the wonderful feeling of waking up for another day’s grind in the City of Angels. Feeling it? Then stay tuned; while Good Kid in a Mad City has yet to receive a drop date, we’ll keep you supplied with all the latest news and tunes.

Kendrick Lamar spazzed out on this Dr. Dre beat. This is definitely something new from Dr. Dre as I've never really heard a beat sound like this from him before... This bumps right here... Dre ripped it too. BANGER $hit!

i logged on this morning and this is the first track that caught my eye. i saw the rating and was like "omg this must be a classic in the making" well not so much for me maybe im having the "hyped up" effect like when you have sooo many people saying how good something is and the you realize that it wasnt all that good. now with that being said i feel this is a definate hot track but nothing worthy of banger or even classic status. i like the beat love the chorus but lyrically it was okay. i'll put this track in a rotation status.

I wouldn't say this was crazy or anything, compared to his other work. Dre sounded nice on this track.

Awesome record! Will be playing this for a while. Always good to hear Dre, he brings great presence to anything he jumps on. Kendrick does his thing as per usual and the beat knocks. Niiiice

would've preferred a Dre produced song, but the sample used by Scoop Deville is genius.

Jeeeziss backbeat/sample is hypnotic! K Dot goes in hard once again...Comforting knowing Dre ain't gonna do for KDot what Jiggaman did for Jermayyyne.

After a long day at work, I was pumped to see the words "smooth" and "West-coast." I needed a track to relax me, so imagine my surprise when I ended up leaning forward in my chair and listening closely for the 4th straight time.

This supposedly mellow track surprised me immediately with some slick rhymes.

This is a solid track from, and shows a lot of potential. Dre is a welcome addition, but there is room to improve. It loses some points for the annoying background sounds during the hook, but Lamar's is definitely one to watch.

the female backup sounds like a screeching cat... the rest is yawns - but I guess anything sounds good if you're blazing enough... very disappointing.

Heard this for the first time at Coachella a week ago, right before Tupac came on stage. Loving this song, Dre is still the best West Coast producer.
