Hip-hop’s never been shy about drinking, but in recent years rappers seem to have taken liver-destruction to a new level. No longer are they content to merely get drunk, now only Swimming Pools full of liquor will do. Coming on the heels of The Recipe, Kendrick Lamar‘s second single, Swimming Pools (Drank), brings in super producer T-Minus for a blurry and faded beat that fits the track’s hypnotic concept perfectly. And while at first Drank may sound like just another booze fest, this is Kendrick Lamar, and sure enough the always complex emcee delves into the dark side of knocking back all those shots, at one point even giving voice to a conscience that warns him that he’s on the verge of collapse. If Kendrick keeps coming with releases like this expect the buzz around his TDE/Aftermath/Interscope debut album, good kid m.A.A.d city, to reach a fever pitch come October 2.

So glad to hear, even on the verge of his major label debut release and he’s slowly hitting us with more of that same strong undeniably Kendrick Lamar music. Also, props go out to T-Minus for knocking out that TDE sound without letting go of any of his trademark style.
The production and mixing is so tightly wound around his vocals which ebb and flow exactly where they should. Kendrick's vocals tone is methodical and measured with a pitch designed to create a deep and dark vibe. And of course, a well-crafted, catchy hook that suck you in and keep hold doesn't hurt the matters. But a legitimate musicality and songwriting ability is also a part and parcel with this package. It IS complex, but with style. It might appear to be the same topic that many rappers talk but with gusto and an overt skill level of execution that most can’t match, and I believe intentionally hides the message that a portion of radio-audience will definitely miss the point. It's a song that make you think about certain situations and habits in your life. Diving deep in a pool full of liquor is probably not the best way to put the brakes on my abuse, but acknowledging the issue is half the battle. Full marks !! Judging by Cartoons & Cereal, The Recipe, and now this gem - the album gone have a good balance of lyrics, beats, content and mass appeal. I'm hyped !! |

The verses and his flow are just f-in' awesome - esspecially from 1.40 to 1.56.
Anyways, the chorus is pretty annoyin' imo and the beat's just ok. |

Kendrick is slowly growing on me. It's taken me a while to really get into his music. I mean, his are superb but I've felt like there's something missing. I can definitely vibe to this but I don't think it's quite on par with "The Recipe".

This is my favorite Kendrick song...this is quite possibly my favorite song of the year. Reminds me a lot of the music I would listen to when driving at night time. Crazy production, and Lamar NEVER lets you down.

The beautiful thing about Kendrick Lamar is the meaning behind his words. In Swimming Pools just like in ADHD he creates the illusion of ignorance that is so often associated with the generation of hip hop party songs today. But behind the facade of the night life and indulgence are relevant and heart felt meaning. This is the song of a mans struggle between pleasure and pain and what makes this truly art is that the listener must also struggle to differentiate between the two. I don't think im looking to deeply into this, I just dont think most people want to dive in.

Loving the distinctly classic Kendrick feel the track has, his flow is undeniable. One of the best out there right now. The chorus wears on you a little but the content in the track more then makes up for the hook.
As someone else stated this is a topic alot of rappers touch on, just not in this manner. Top marks. Dope track. |
