With the perennial appeal of ‘Chipmunk’-style samples, you’d think the Chipmunks would be obvious beat material, but to my knowledge, nobody in the hip-hop game has taken the plunge… until now. Sure to bring fond memories flooding into the heads of ‘80s babies, Kendré‘s first feature, Mah Little Dance Song, off his newly-released Who’s the Nerd? mixtape, sees the Flint, Michigan native flipping the theme from the classic animated series into a backdrop for a Land of 1000 Dances-esque rundown of recent trends in getting down. If that sounds completely ridiculous, well, that’s because it is. Whether you find the cartoonish production catchy (like moi) or maddening, though, there’s no denying that the 19-year-old rapper/actor (he played Jabari on CW sitcom Girlfriends) can spit. Throughout his party-ready verses, Kendré busts out effortlessly speedy flows sure to have even the most stoic hip-hop heads nodding along appreciatively.  If you can get past the Alvin and the Chipmunks sample, which always put a smile on my face, and take Kendré seriously you'll quickly realize that the kid can actually spit. Especially when he jumps into a double-time rhyme on verse two. Nice intro.

To be honest, I was fully prepared for this to be painful - but Kendre really pulled it off. Obviously the most pop of pop songs, but no reason to hate just because of that. At least he had the guts to tackle the Chipmunk sample thing head-on.

3.5 Here. I love it when beats are really creative, but they also need to have some decent flows over them or they can't be listened to more than once (see "Windows Media Player" by Charles Hamilton). Here, Kendré spits with more than enough skill to make this song good. Best part is the sample though.

Like Nathan said, I expected this to be trash. Even when I heard the intro with the sample I still said trash.
BUT! I was impressed, after the 808 kicked in my head was nodding. I must say enjoyed this little dance song. Sure did bring back memories of my chimp monk days. |

Yo Yo! This track is crazy hot. Kendre took the challenge of the Chipmunks track and bounced a back beat, and fired it up while spitting some blaze. Creative crazy.

This is a pretty cool song but its very funny though. I never thought anyone would flip Alvin and The Chipmunks like that but he pulled it off. I could definently see myself dancing to this, but it will never make it in the club.
