Kelis - Acapella
Artist: Kelis
Producer: David Guetta
Album: Untitled 5th Studio Album
Label: will.i.am Music Group/Interscope
Earlier this year, after splitting up with husband Nas, singer Kelis found herself single and very pregnant. A new album was probably the last thing on her mind, but what a difference a few months can make. On her new single, Acapella, Kelis talks about love and life and shows her range and talent as a singer. Producer David Guetta, whose last DJBooth feature Memories earned him reader approval, proves he is a master at mixing up sounds, and knows just when to slow the beat down for dramatic effect. Even though the track has an energetic, upbeat feel, vocally Kelis is working through some real emotional pain, sounding much more mature than she did in her chart topper Milkshake, from way back in 2003. Her lost love and emotional pain is perfectly described in a metaphor, as she sings, “Before you my whole life was acapella, now a symphony is the only song to sing.” Acapella will be off Kelis’ currently untitled fifth studio album, set for a release in early 2010.

David Guetta is slowly becoming one of the most in-demand producers in the industry. You work with him and its always a guarantee that your material will get spins at the club. Kelis knows a thing or two about the club and together it shows. This is not at all my cup of tea (and it doesn't have that powerful of an effect out of computer speakers), but I think plenty of people will dig it.

I'm a big fan of Guetta's productions, but I really wasn't feeling Kelis on this. I'll pass.

The cynical side of me agrees completely with Menilik MHD. Sounds like Kelis realized she needed some funds and decided winning over the clubs was the quickest way to a payday. Maybe for some, but this does nothing for me. Kelis sounds like a mediocre disco singer.

Song will do good in the Euro/Dance/Electronica communities. Though it has a typical techno 4/4 beat.

LeWy, I agree. I think they need to edit out Kelis, and start over. Bangin production, not so hot everything else.

I heard this and thought this has to be David Guetta. Then I read it, and I was like wow. I don't why, but I like it alot, her voice goes well with the mix.

The beat is off the hook (for the dance/trance crowd anyways) which has become the norm for David. SMH for Kelis...I didn't think she was horrible as most people have mentioned (not the greatest either). I wonder what people would have thought of the song if they didn't know it was her. Anyways, I don't think this is a banger but it deserves a chance so I'll give it a 4 (mainly because of the beat) to bring up the overall average.
Hopefully this will do well so she doesn't have to bleed Nasty Nas dry lol |

I am feeling this for Kelis right here. She is always doing something totally out of the box and she is usually successful with it and I think she is here to some extent as well. This would be CRAZY in the club, especially if drugs are involved...
