Kelis - 4th of July (Fireworks)
Artist: Kelis
Producer: DJ Ammo
Album: Flesh Tone
Label: will.i.am Music Group/Interscope
Say what you want about Kelis and her very public divorce from Nas, the lady still lays down music the people seem to like - and nothing is different with her new single 4th of July (Fireworks). As hip-hop, r&b and pop artists embrace and incorporate more electro into their music (like French producer/DJ David Guetta, who has produced hits such as Akon’s Sexy Bi**h and KiD CuDi’s Memories), it will only be a short time before “everyone” in the industry jumps on board. Having left her Milkshake far behind, Kelis has completely adopted the electro aesthetic on 4th of July, leaving listeners with a head-nodding dance track that’s sure to become a staple of pre-partying people everywhere as they prepare to hit the clubs this summer. With DJ Ammo providing the beat, this one has “girls’ night out” written all over it. Kelis’ new album album, Flesh Tone, is out now in the UK and will drop stateside on July 6.

The production on this track is so good. You have to hand it too DJ Ammo, he really set up a great track for Kelis to sing over. It has a great combination of pop and electro feel to it. A really strong piano background works great with these type of songs and Kelis does a decent job with.
Honestly it would have been hard for someone to mess this song up, but that being said Kelis did it justice. Her vocals meld well with the beat and add to the song. The more I listen to the song the better the production gets. Again, DJ Ammo did an excellent job on this one. |

Production is really good. Guetta-like and possibly a bit better because of how the piano works in. Not only will girls like this one, but I can see myself bumpin this in the club. Good job Kelis.

Eh, the production was alright. Not really feeling her voice, sounds like a male RnB singer at times.

the beat was solid, but you cant go wrong with using a pilotpriest beat

the beat is fire (5 stars), the way it flows is really tite. it probably would do better with someone else singing it, she never hit the crazy hook that gets you jumping, i was waiting for it but it never came.

At first I was like 'Okay I'm going to dig this song' until the beat and production died on me. Sorry Kelis

This is gonna get some heavy plays in the club but not in my ipod. The beat is dope but I couldn't stand Kelis over it. I'm not even sure what the song's about and I really don't care anyways. A waste of a good beat.

I support well done "Electro" music fused with Hip Hop & R&B. This is awful.

One of those "definitely not my style but I can see how other people will dig it" joints. Kelis is obviously trying to restart her career in club music (hip-hop's a little complicated for her now) and so far it's looking like a good move.
I think we can all agree these lyrics aren't about Nas. |

The platinum-colored hair is an interesting choice, but we all know that Kelis is an interesting artist (to say the least). The club-centric single selection is no surprise, but the production heavily outshines the vocal performance. This isn't dreadful, so I am feeling generous when I give it a 3.

Its all about the beat - and that right here is too easy and predictable.

Well at least its better that Acapella as there is a lot more context to this song, which will make it more successful.

Almost stopped listening once she started singing. But than it got better. Like Kelis but maybe this beat was meant for someone else.

I am kinda feelin this right here. I think Kelis is always off the wall and different. This is definitely a club BANGER. I'll throw it in rotation. I think she will do well if her album sounds like this. Good track overall. She still has a good unique sound.

The vocals started to get pitchy at parts. This isn't a radio type of song its more for clubs and thats exactly where it will do well. but for me not to good.
