The Throne - Otis
Artist: The Throne
Featuring: Kanye West , Jay-Z
Producer: Kanye West
Album: Watch The Throne
Label: Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam/IDJMG
By now, I think we’re all in agreement that H.A.M. was, in point of fact, “Hard as a motherf*cker”... or are we? In any case, there’s no point in resurrecting that debate when we can move on to battling over the newly-released follow-up. Otis, the second single off Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s collaborative LP, comes doubly saddled with high expectations—not only does it come courtesy of two of the game’s reigning heavyweights, but it pays homage to one of the greatest soul men of all time. West’s handles production, departing from his baroque MBDTF style in favor of a stripped-down instrumental sampled from the legendary Otis Redding’s Try a Little Tenderness. Lyrically, Hov and ‘Ye are on their high-rolling swag ish, the former threatening to “call the paparazzi on [himself]” and the latter showing off his extensive collection of Benzes (and his unorthodox brand of theology: “I made ‘Jesus Walks’ so I’m never going to hell.”). So, is this joint worthy of its namesake, as well as the lofty reputations of its creators? I have a feeling that question could keep heads occupied till Watch the Throne hits iTunes on August 8 and store shelves four days later on the 12th.

Now THIS is the kind of music I expected to hear from these two. Not the greatest track I've ever heard, but Jay-Z and Kanye definitely killed this track, especially Yeezy with the production. Can't wait for Watch The Throne!

I'm feelin' the old-school soulful production... And... Otis Redding'z vocal-sample addz a-lot to the overall-appeal... But... Jay & Ye'z tag-team attack iz the most enjoyable aspect of thiz track though... ****'s

Decent track, but it has its flaws.
1. Beat overpowers the rappers. 2. Looped sample is annoying as heck. 3. Woman screaming at the end was uncalled for. |

Can't say I was the biggest fan of H.A.M. so this song was definitely a sigh of relief. The rapping is flawless. Kanye sounds like his old self production wise. If anything I'd say the beat, and by that I mean just the drums, is lacking on this song. It doesn't have the bass rattling type of beat that gets people dancing in a club, but there's nothing wrong with a song thats just meant to be listened to. The sample fills out the song nice enough. It has an old school feel to it and that alone should have the song playing for a long time.

So far, it looks like this has the same problem as that Bad Meets Evil EP. They got into the booth and had fun. That's usually a good thing, but they didn't go to work. When rappers view this as a job...as a hustle, the result is usually better. I still have high hopes for Watch The Throne, but...

Ok just want to say that I have no idea what the hell the concept of this album is gonna be. Is it just gonna be collection of jay-z and kanye west leftovers. Because that is what I feel like we gonna get. This track is more thought out and put together than ham. That being said its no classic. I was expecting much more ESPECIALLY LYRICALLY from these two! August the 8th will prove alot is all I'm saying.

Not a bad track, but if it's the best track on the cd, the cd is gonna be very disappointing. The song itself is cool, though. Both Jay and Kanye flow pretty well and the sample is pretty cool. Definitely in rotation but I expect better from these two.

Nope.
So now unoriginality is okay when coupled with a mediocre beat, as long as it comes from these two heavyweights? How many times have we heard this before? I don't even want to imagine it without the association hype linked to Otis Redding, which let me down and flopped short of what could have been. I obviously missed the influx of memorable lines, but they're there, right? I counted roughly two and a half. Boothizens, what's going on here? |

As soon as these two artists get together, it is all HELL broke loose. Seriously. They are running the game. I don't care who don't agree. I haven't been a Jay-Z fan, until one of my cousins kept playing his material. Then, I grew on to like him. But, as far as 'Ye. I have always seen this guy around, never really heard his material. But, when I did start listening to this guy. I knew I was hooked for life. You can hear this guys pain as he speaks, like seriously. And, he was never the person to be talking about 'guns', 'violence', etc, the 'normal' for the industry...which gave me a whole lot of respect for him, because trying to separate from the industry's standard could be a difficult thing to do. But, look at him now. As far as 'Otis' goes, it is well put together. The flow of the two, the sample, production, everything is dope. Definitely, one of those 'radio-hits'...'cause, they've definitely been playing this out since it came out. Lol. But, I would give this a 4 out of 5. The whole 'Watch The Throne' album is phenomenal by the way. But, I'll save my review for that for the 'Album Reviews'.
