A quick glance over the tracklist of Kanye West‘s sixth studio album is enough to prove that Yeezus will be the hip-hop megastar’s most provocative and politically-charged project to date. If you followed his career to date though, you know that social commentary has long been central to his style. This Throwback Thursday, we’re taking a look at All Falls Down which, according to a recent New York Times interview, represented the moment in his career when he realized he could, “make… raps with a message sound cool.” (Kicking it with dead prez reportedly helped him reach that epiphany.) Released in 2004—yes, it was almost a decade ago—as the second single off debut album The College Dropout, the record features Yeezy delivering wry lyrical reflections on consumerism over a deft interpolation of Lauryn Hill‘s Mystery of Iniquity. R&B songstress Syleena Johnson provides guest vocals on the cut, and Chris Milk directs the official video (featuring cameos from Kel Mitchell, Common and GLC). Now that you’ve enjoyed this blast from the past, why not go back and revisit the rest of Kanye’s freshman set? I promise, it’ll be more fun than Googling “Has Yeezus leaked?” every 15 seconds.
