Throughout his Manic Mondays series, K. Sparks has proven himself as a peerless punchline lyricist, a hip-hop philosopher, a verbal gymnast, and a thinking man’s club rapper (to name just a few of his many faces), but in the midst of all this musical shapeshifting he’s shown a willingness to get more personal than many would dare—though we caught a glimpse of the his serious side on Tattoo, an earnest take on the issues of race and prejudice, the Midnight Thoughts he explores in installment #38 are easily his deepest yet. Rejoining forces with ‘K. Francis’ R&B singer Julius Francis over a melancholy instrumental by S.D.F. Floh, the rapper addresses the recent, untimely death of his 28-year-old brother, Sequain, who passed suddenly due to a blood clot in his lung. A tribute this heartfelt is guaranteed to earn condolences and rave reviews in equal measure, but Sparks’ dedication to his craft shines as brightly here as his dedication to the memory of his late brother—simply put, this is good music. Readers will have plenty to say about this one, so I’ll just speak for myself: Sparks, I’m sorry for your loss; much respect for staying strong and moving forward through the pain.

This was a real deep, moving, sad track from Sparks. There shouldn't have been a reason to have to write it, and my condolences go out to K Sparks. But real artists know how to make great music out of the worst situations. That is exactly what Sparks does here. I'm sorry for your loss, and much love.

My condolences K. Sparks...
Only a few rappers could manage to create something beautiful out of a tragedy though, Sparks is that type of man: he has the lyrics and delivery to do it! Julius Francis is so smooth and suitable to this! Like with Julius Francis, K. Sparks now brings a great artist to look out for: S.D.F. Floh! Sampling Sting's "Fragile", adding new elements to the point of creating an alternative version, was genius! |

This is sweet. Brought a tear to my eye. Good work Sparks-I can tell Sequain is looking down on you tonight and he is smiling.
RIP to all the people who were soo important in my life that are gone now-Grandparents Burmeister and Grandpa Sabbath, Aunt Donna, Uncle Gene, my Great Uncles Jack, Billy, Ray, and Harry, as well, as my Great Aunts Margaret and Irene, also my best friend's mom (and my mom's best friend) Ramona Mailett-Meekma, and last but not least Fr. Al Metzger (the priest who gave me first Reconciliation, first Communion, and first Anointing of the Sick) and my confirmation sponsor John Morrow-I'll see y'all when I get there! (For those who have loved ones who are still living but are dealing with certain conditions-make out the most of your time for them! Every day might be the last one you get to spend with them, so treat it accordingly!) |

This is an awesome composition. The production, lyrics and chorus were on point and drew me in.
I also send my condolences as well. I too lost a brother make in 2006 to gun violence in South Minneapolis. It was a hard time, but God and making music definitely helped me through it. This is heartfelt music. Sparks, good ish my brother! |

Is there anything this guy cant do?! One week he's funny, and now he shows his serious side. With such a dynamic range, K Sparks is definitely going to rise to the top.

It's cool. I don't see how you can get "a tear in your eye" though. I don't even know what he's saying because I'm not listening to the lyrics that closely. But it's listenable. I can't get tears in my eyes that easily.
