K. Sparks - Mind Elevation (Kurser Remix)
Artist: K. Sparks
Featuring: Cymarshall Law
Producer: Kurser
Album: A Day in the Life (The Kurser Remix Suite)
Label: Unsigned
As I see it, there are remixes, and then there are remixes. What’s the difference, you ask, other than one being in italics? I haven’t decided yet; I just said that because it sounded smart. Whenever I get around to drawing up the criteria, though, you can bet that Mind Elevation, the first leak off K. Sparks and Kurser‘s A Day in the Life remix LP, will fall on the in-italics side of the equation – it just has that creative oomph. Here, the French producer pulls off one of the most dramatic makeovers I’ve heard in a minute, trading the original’s spacey throwback groove for a bass-booming dancehall beat. Those familiar with Sparks’ eclectic track record won’t be surprised to find that the longtime Booth fave comes off just as dope over the revamped instrumental; nor should fans of guest Cymarshall Law be surprised that the Jersey-based emcee, whose style draws upon his Caribbean roots, sounds like he was born to rhyme over this beat. Is the result better than the (non-featured) original? That’s for you to decide. Either way, more dopeness awaits on Kurser’s forthcoming remix suite, due out Dec. 7. (The original album, of course, is still available online).

This production vibe is a new sound for K. Sparks. And that is exactly what I love about him as an emcee - he isn't afraid to let his stable of producers craft beats that are off the path just a bit. Whether its a jazz influence, or a reggae influence here, its a complimentary backdrop to his always stellar lyrical efforts.

I absolutly loved K. Sparks's last records. They really connected to me. They are still rockin on my playlist. And here is a track that makes what i just said, a lil off. Cuz, honestly, im not feeling this. At all. The production is really annoying from Kurser. And the chorus is boring. The whole song is boring with very low quality. K. Sparks can do better. Alot better. I hope.... or his career is over. (all my opinoin). I would rat this "rotation" but it wont be.

Bedstuy on the check in,
I'm riding with DJ Z on this one. Here is my review. Any artist that is willing to step outside of the "norm" and try something different that is actually good product I support. Sparks has proven he is one of the most (if not the most) consistent Indie Hip Hop artist, period. On top of that he always willing to try new sounds. How many artist today stick to their normally comfort zone formally over and over. At least the guy is trying something fresh. On top of that I love the production from Kurser, and Spizzy and Cy both killed the verses. In my opionion this is just another record that proves K. Sparks is one of the best. |

As a BIG raggae and dance hall fan I love this. I was NOT expecting this at all from Sparks. But I must admit I love it.

K. Sparks: Came with it as always. Lyrical beast on the mic.
Cymarshall Law: Delivered a dope feature verse to compliment Sparks. Kurser: Executed some solid production to nail this remix. Richard said it best "it just has that creative oomph". I purchased the original ADINTL album and this is vastly different in a dope way. Hats off to all involved. |

Beats like this can get corny in less expert hands - luckily Kurser's an expert. Something about the chop of the best stopped me from completely engaging, but there's no doubt that that Sparks crushed the mic (yet again). Props.

"So when I zone out, I tend to zone out. Deeper then the rest spit it deeper I'm the best" Dopeness from spizzy. Sparks and kurser have great chemistry. Since super senior these two always deliver.

Great review and thanks to everyone for the input. We were skeptical about releasing this remix as it is so different from the original, but in the end I think that's what made it work so well. Hats off to Kurser!
The whole remix album is so different from the original and brings in elements of all genres of music. For a preview of the full album, you can stream it here: http://hipnottrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-day-in-the-life-the-kurser-remix-suite The album will be available on iTunes and Amazon on Dec 7th. Also dropping Dec 7th is the original A Day In The Life on compact disc with 3 additional bonus tracks. Thanks for all the support! |

I had to rate this for what it is. Meaning actually listen to the vibe and direction. For a Hip Hop & Reggae blend this wins. December 7th I'm all in babes xoxo

K Sparks is one of my favorite underground hip-hop artists. But this is the first time I'm not giving him 4-5 stars, I'm just not feeling this one as much as his past records.

K. Sparks is one of my favorite artists, without a doubt. However, unlike a lot of others, this track didn't make the connection that so many of his other tracks have. Nothing about this track is terrible and nothing about it is amazing. Overall, solid remix. I'm counting down the days for that release.
