Despite a wealth of talent and drive (see her last DJBooth-approved feature Fallin), Memphis crooner K. Michelle has struggled to move forward with her debut album Pain Medicine. But now that none other than R. Kelly has signed on to executive produce the album, nothing but bright skies should lie ahead. The first proof of Michelle and Kelly’s collaborative efforts comes in the form of the new single I Just Can’t Do This, a deeply soulful cut built around lush, classic R&B production from Kelly, who also wrote the track. Thankfully, Michelle is far from outshined by The Pied Piper’s contributions as she delivers a dynamic, captivating vocal performance that should draw immediate comparisons to Keyshia Cole; not because they sound alike, but because they both are capable of injecting passionate emotion into their voices. I don’t know what to tell you. If you’re not feeling this, you might not have a soul - and if K. Michelle keeps putting out tracks like Can’t Do This, it’s only a matter of time before we have some Pain Medicine to ease what ails us.

 Most of K. Michelle's past features have received 3-star ratings from me. It isn't that she is an average singer, its that she's had average material (writing, production) to work with. Now, with the release of this new single, that all changes.
Kelly's production and pen game are some of the best in the industry and Michelle is the beneficiary of a record that can/should/will chart. This could be her Keyshia Cole "Love."

Love this girl, she rarely disappoints. This sounds like something from around 2003, very nostalgic. R. Kelly provided a nice beat.

I think everybody said it best-this will be her breakout track. I expect to see it all over radio (Kells holds down a lot of weight at Jive-that's why Joe's not signed anymore). Ever since she first emerged from underground over two years ago, I've supported her mission of bringing her life to the music and relating to others' situations.
(Side note: Memphitz, ya blew it again! First Asia Cruise, then Huey...I don't know whether Jive's gonna renew your executive contract at this point) |

She did her damn thing on this one and carried the beat beautifully. One of the best things is that she is truly in awe of this song. Unlike songs like "Make Up Bag" males should be able to relate to this song because a) you were that guy or b) you know a chick that was with that guy. @Burmy Memphitz threatened to shelf her album after she alleged he abused her. Was bold enough to tweet that and say he decides when her album comes out.

Damn, I'm loving everything on the Booth today. Ok, almost everything (sorry Pleasure P). Michelle was an incredible talent before, and with Kelly's hand at the wheel she's taking it to the next level. I knew she was good, but I don't think I truly appreciated just how good her voice was until now. Damn...I mean, damn.

My ABSOLUTE favorite song atm! I literally keep this song on repeat in my car. I'ts amazing. I've heard some of her other songs and I always felt as if she was overdoing it. But now I'm thinking that maybe the music just wasn't good enough to keep up with her beautiful voice. This beat and her vocals are a perfect match.
