Justin Garner - Love You Long Time
Artist: Justin Garner
Producer: Kenna Okoye
Album: TBD
Label: Unsigned
When Stanley Kubrick and company were writing Full Metal Jacket, I doubt they were working under the assumption that (arguably) the film’s most lasting mark on pop culture would come courtesy of walk-on character “Da Nang Hooker,” who propositions a U.S. Marine by announcing, “Me so horny, me Love You Long Time.” Famously flipped by 2 Live Crew and Sir Mix-a-Lot, that immortal line gets put to an unusually seductive use on this cut, the latest promo single from Justin Garner. Backed by Kenna Okoye‘s time-tested chord progression and handclap-driven percussion rhythm, the rising soul star makes his most direct assault on pop-accustomed eardrums to date, exhibiting some characteristically impressive vocal chops as he lets a special girl know exactly what’s gonna happen if she comes ‘round his way. (And ladies will be happy to hear that, unlike the character he’s quoting, he won’t even be charging for his services.) Will this tunefully seductive selection be Garner’s ticket to Hitsville? You tell me. Whatever your verdict, you can keep it locked to you-know-where for all the latest from this talented up-and-comer.

If Garner doesn't get singed like um...tomorrow, then that really shows how messed up the music industry is today. He's made so many unrecognized classics, that it's sad. Maybe he's just buying his time, but many of his songs that he's wrote so far should have reached the level of some of Usher's classic songs. I'm curious to see how long it'll be before he makes it big.

I am honestly a bit miffed; I can't believe Garner still hasn't been scooped up by a major label. The man can write and sing hit records. The whole "Love You Long Time" angle isn't earth shattering, but listen to the radio for 15 minutes these days and you'll notice not much is. As far as indie R&B/pop is concern, this is just about as good as its going to get.

Agree with the listeners, I think the time is close for our friend Justin to get major labels on his back. If this track went through a major label upgrade it may be a chart topper with a little mastering and perhaps a few lyric alters. But you can't deny Justin's ear for good music and his voice which may be better than half of your favorite artists. Good look here.

This is exactly the kind of smooth, well crafted, easily enjoyable track that the masses should be scooping up, but I have to say, that hook makes me kind of laugh (which I don't think was the effect he was going for). Switch it up to "I'll love you a long time" and I think you've got a hit.
It's crazy how much two words can change so much. |
