After hearing Justin Garner‘s last feature, Soundz-produced ballad Runaway, Booth readers and staff agreed that the Lousiana-bred up-and-comer was headed straight to pop stardom. Now, with the summer 2010 release of his debut studio album glimmering on the horizon, the singer’s joined forces with DJBooth to bring early adopters across the ‘net his new White Labels EP. Among the remixes and covers to appear on the five-track set is this revamp of Can’t Breathe, a cut off UK singer/songwriter Leona Lewis’ recently-released sophomore full-length, Echo. Garner’s soaring vocals sound right at home over Uriel Kadouch & Vein‘s uplifting, reverb-drenched synth-strings, and the finished product sounds more like a full-fledged collabo than a remix; with Garner’s addition, the track’s melisma-packed climax is rendered even more breathtaking than on the original.  Never heard the original version of this record, but I am glad I didn't. I honestly cannot enjoy it without Justin's vocals. If this isn't proof the man is bound to takeover in the coming years, I guess just stay tuned for what we are ready to unleash shortly.

Wow - heard a few of JG's features on the booth, but this is easily his breakout. He has one of the (if not the) best voices out of the new R&B gang coming through, and this was his playground to show off!

Kind of has a Mario vibe to me, back when Mario was still making dope music. This is a once in a generation voice, if Justin Garner doesn't blow up on this one the music industry's more f**ked than I thought.

Never heard the Original, but I don't think there is any need to get familiar with it now. Justin laced strong vocals, but doesn't exhibit enough range or emotions as Leona Lewis did. Still, a BANGER!!!
Definitely looking forward to his DJBooth Exclusive mixtape. |

Wow Justin Garner has a great voice. I've never heard the original version either but damn this one is good enough for me. Both artists sounded amazing. That hook was real nice. Leona can get up there in pitch. Wow.

Always nice to bring in some new future regulars! hahaa Justins voice is incredible, and I agree with the statement on him having one of the best IF not the best new voices coming up, His voice is so soulful, and this song is amazing. Ever since hearing Open Heart by Justin Garner, I have been a fan. I completely agree with DJ Z, this version is so much better than Leona Lewis' solo effort. This is certainly an artist who's going places.

I'm loving this but I definitely still recommend the original. I'm not quite sure which I prefer. Leona Lewis is ultra-talented but Justin certainly seems to have the potential to outmatch her. Classic.

The original was classic, but I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Leona carried it by herself just fine, I don't think this guy adds to it really but that's just my opinion. At least he's not that awful Jason Derulo dude.
Anyway, like Rova said, when are you guys going to get back to reviewing albums? Leona's new album is really good, there a plenty of great tracks to choose from (Don't Let Me Down, I Got You, etc.). |

@ Rova 40 - We just got the "Til' The Casket Drops" review. I don't think the reviews have slowed down much, I'm just not sure what Nathan's criteria is for which particular albums are reviewed. We're missing Birdman, Juvenile, Jay Sean, Tech N9ne and many others who have come out recently.
On that note, DJ Booth, if you need a second reviewer to fill in on the albums that Nathan can't get to, I'm willing to fill in free of charge. ;) |
