JR & PH7 - Top Rank ft. Guilty Simpson & Black Milk
Artist: JR & PH7
Featuring: Black Milk , Guilty Simpson
Producer: JR&PH7
Album: So Far, So Good
Label: Soulspazm Records/Foundation Media
Here’s a head-scratcher for you: what do the cities of Detroit, Michigan and Cologne, Germany have in common? As far as I know, the answer was “very little” until this song came along. In the latest testament to hip-hop’s status as a truly global art form, German production duo JR&PH7 have joined forces with two Motor City vets to prove that border-crossing collabos can indeed yield Top Rank results. Guilty Simpson‘s bookends the cut with booming verses, flexing his authoritative flow as he lets listeners know that nothing will stop him from getting that paper, while Slum Village emcee/producer Black Milk amps up the wordplay in between. Their double-barreled lyrical attack hits home with the force of “two Scud missiles,” and JR&PH7 top the track off with some street-certified boardwork, accenting their bass-heavy beat with spaced-out synth flourishes. This Top Rank cut is only the tip of the iceberg for JR&PH7; due out April 7th, forthcoming LP The Standard will feature appearances by Planet Asia, Skyzoo, Oddisee, and more.

Not gonna lie when I saw that pic I was not expecting much at all from this. Really surprised me here though. Whoever that is on the opening verse has such a dark voice that matches the production perfectly. Overall great work. A little too hard for me, but its still in rotation.

The mood of the song is really dark but the production is pretty solid. The lyrics are pretty good and the hook isnt that bad either. I can throw this in rotation but just nothing I would listen to often

Solid production from these Booth newcomers (cb - do NOT judge a book by its cover, yo). Motown emcees will always be slept on (at least, those not named Eminem), but do not sleep on GS and BM (who is actually better on the boards than the mic).
Overall, a total banger. Rotation in my headphones. |

This track is solid. The production is pretty cool, and both Detroit rappers' flows are on point. In rotation.

The atmosphere of the track is what made this a 4-star affair. Black and Guilty aren't breaking new ground lyrically, but they stay in the pocket and the beat makes them sound different than usual (in a good way).
