Fresh off the June 15, release of their hotly-anticipated fourth full-length, The Pursuit of Nappyness, Kentucky’s own Nappy Roots are back in the Booth to introduce us to an up-and-coming emcee and fellow Bluegrass State native by the name of Johnny Spanish. While fans of Latin hip-hop might be slightly disappointed to hear that new single Shining (Remix) finds the Louisville native and his heavyweight collaborators delivering their rhymes totalmente en inglés (well, aside from “pesos”), those with a taste for Southern street music should find it right up their alley. Backed by CHOPS’ sproingy synth-brass and bouncing percussion rhythm, the collaborators cover all the usual bases – cash, weed, cars – with wit and panache. For his part, the headliner proves more than able to keep up with Skinny, Scales & co, staking his claim on the Ky. hip-hop game and telling the haters they can “suck it” in an infectious, sung-rapped flow. If you consider this banger a Shining example of Southern rap at its best, you’ll want to keep it locked for further release details on Johnny Spanish’ The Lip LP.

It never hurts to have the Nappy Roots crew on your first Booth feature. Oh, and Texas production legend CHOPS is also a great look.
So, the only question is whether or not Mr. Spanish could keep up with his hired accompaniment. And the answer? A semi-confident yes. At times I feel the only thing driving the record is the production, but vocally there is enough here for plenty of listeners to enjoy.

I liked his flow and the beat. Not really feelin the last verse though. The last verse is why it only gets 3 stars.

Hmmmm....this track's kind of hit or miss for me. I thought Spanish's second verse was tight, but the beat's a litte basic, and I can't say the Nappy Roots blew me away. Hook's a little iffy too. No hate, just not feeling this one.

I hope this kid keeps producing. He has a lot of potential, I'd hate to see this as his first and last hyped up song.
I have to say his song Fight the Sun is pretty hott too though. I think with some time this kid could be great. Lyrics/beat are a lil simple..but like I said, the kid has potential for sure. |

This is just a taste of whats on his FREE album, "The Lip"... he kills every track.... I saw Johnny a couple weeks ago at SouthPaw, in BK.... he was the opening act but stole the show and they ended up making him main attraction.... im pretty sure they asked him back for the july 24th show, so if ne one is in the area i advise you to see this kid...

What more could a major record label want in an artist? Originality, talent, and the ability to be marketable. Such qualities in an artist rarely exist Spanish is major
