Johnny Spanish - Up in the Clouds
Artist: Johnny Spanish
Producer: Fresh Prodeuce
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: Unsigned
Those who tuned in for the Kentucky buzzmaker’s previous Booth features, Got’ Damn Shame and Shining (Remix), know that Johnny Spanish is fly, but just how fly is he? As the up-and-comer puts it on his latest promo single, he’s “floatin’ Up in the Clouds. Though using altitude as a metaphor for style, skills and/or status is nothing new, Español keeps things as fresh as… well, I would have said “fresh produce,” if it weren’t for the fact that the beat, centered around an oddly-familiar pizzicato string sample, is actually by Fresh Prodeuce. The headliner does his part to keep listeners on their toes, hitting every point in the singing/sing-rapping/rapping continuum and dropping plenty of braggadocious quotables in the process: “I was raised in a lion’s den / take my sword, cut the head off Leviathan…” This joint isn’t attached to any project at the moment, but fans fiending for more Johnny Spanish may want to consider booking a flight to NYC for this Thursday’s Booth-sponsored Are You Listening? showcase, featuring Español and many more of today’s hottest up-and-comers.

I hate to make comparisons (they are never fair to the newer artist), but I have no choice here haha. This song finds Johnny sounding a lot like a down south version of Outasight. I only say this because our readers have been familiar with Outasight's work for the past 3-4 years. And that is a complement!
"Up in the Clouds" is the best record I've heard from Spanish to date and also is a welcome introduction to the capabilities of Fresh Prodeuce. |

That hook is nuts. Great way to compensate the beat. As for the raps, Spanish is heavy on the lyrical content. Not a huge fan of the flow, but I'm a huge fan of the track overall.

This song is INFECTIOUS!
Basically, this Louisville kid is the Total Package like Lex Luger at SummerSlam ’93 and if he can continually channel his natural creativity and confidence from here on out, 2010 could be a big year for this 21-year-old potential shining star. |

Yep, that hook is audio crack. I was going to nitpick a little bit, but now that I'm on my third lesson, I'd rather just say I was really impressed . Z's right, this is the best I've heard from Spanish, and I'm reconsidering what I thought his ceiling is. Dope.

Whoah, first song I've ever heard from this guy, blown away, such an addictive sound, chorus and singing/flow. Lyrics fairly decent too. This guy deserves alotta recognition if he can produce tracks like this...

The beat and hook are bananas. It's a song that will grow on you. Nice production, but the I'm not a big fan of the flow. Kinda whiny, singerish flow. Someone needs to remix this song and kill the versus...
